Think Kidneys
Guide to Social Media
General rules for using social media
Getting started with social media can feel like a daunting process. This guide shows
you the sites you could use and how you could use them to reach more people.
Just remember these simple rules:
Be careful about the personal details you post online such as contact details, date of
birth, your profession, your organisation. Such information could put you at risk of
identity fraud.
Do not say anything online that you would not say personally or wish others to hear
– once you have posted it will be there forever.
If you are posting about the Think Kidneys programme, make sure it’s accurate and
in line with our messages. If you are in doubt contact one of the team to check.
Have fun and enjoy the various platforms
Twitter
What is Twitter?
Twitter is a form of social media
You can network with millions of
people - all around the world
The world is on Twitter – from
celebrities to business
professionals, and people in all
walks of life
Organisations, companies and
businesses all have Twitter
accounts
| 4
| 5
Getting Started
Set up your account
Enter your name, email, and a
password.
Click Sign up
You will now be taken to a second
screen where can select a
username. This is the name by
which you will be known on
Twitter.
What name should you use?
Your real name is best—if it’s
available. If not, you can try using
a middle initial or prefacing it with
something like “the” or “real”
“@TheJulieSlevin” or
“@Real JulieSlevin”
Use initial capital letters and in-
word capitals. It will make your
username more readable and
memorable. For example:
@JulieSlevin
| 6
Your Twitter Name
Barack Obama @BarackObama
Cristiano Ronaldo @Cristiano
Emma Watson @EmWatson
Russell Brand @rustyrockets
Ken Bruce @RealKenBruce
Now click on the Create my account button. That’s it. You are now official a member
of the Twitter community.
Next, Twitter will help you to get started. It will explain what a tweet is and give you
the opportunity to “follow” a few friends, popular people, or brands. You can opt out
of these steps for now if you wish. Simply click the Skip this step link.
Twitter will also give you a chance to see if some of your friends are on Twitter by
checking your online address book. However, your contacts will have to be in one of
the supported services: GMail, Hotmail, Yahoo, or AOL. Also, you’ll only see users
who have allowed their accounts to be found by email address.
| 7
You’re on Twitter
Personalise your profile
Go to your Twitter home page.
Click on the Settings link. You should be on the Account tab. Set the time zone and
make whatever other changes you want.
Click the Save button.
Now click on the Profile tab. Upload your picture – so people know you are real.
Enter the rest of your information, including your location, website and a short
biography, which can either be serious or fun, but it must be brief—no more than
160 characters.
You can also connect your Twitter account to Facebook on this page. This will post
all your Tweets directly to Facebook. (I don’t do this, but you may wish to)
When you are finished, click the Save button.

Think Kidneys @ThinkKidneys
Follow people you are interested in –
colleagues, celebrities, politicians,
friends, family
Follow people who your friends
follow
Use the search bar to find people
| 9
Who to follow
You may prefer to start by simply
watching what others are Tweeting about
When people Tweet on a particular topic,
they use hashtag to link the conversation
#kidneys
#dialysis
Or special occasions, TV programmes and
more
#Christmas
#strictly
You can search using # in front of words
to find topics
| 10
Getting Started
If you like something that someone
says, you can “retweet” it.
This will show on your timeline and
anyone who follows you can see it.
| 11
Take a dip
| 12
Replying to people
You can also use the Reply function
to refer to someone by name. For
example:
I am going to #cnoconference with
@KarenThomas111
The thing about replies is that they
are “clickable links.” If someone who
is following me, clicks on one of the
names, they will automatically go to
that person’s Twitter page. This will
give them the opportunity to follow
that person, too.
You can reply to people. For example
@ThinkKidneys I was also at
#cnoconference
Everyone who is following
@ThinkKidneys and me will see the
message, but I am specifically
directing it to Think Kidneys. (Those
who are not following both of us will
not see the message.)
Try a Tweet
The main thing to remember is that your
Tweet must be 140 characters or less.
It should be something you would
normally say.
Its fine to start with something like:
This is my first Tweet #firsttweet
Or jump in with an announcement:
Today I am at the #RCN conference in
Birmingham
Find # for any events and be sure to
include it
As long as you are sensible you cant say
anything wrong
| 13
Have a go at Tweeting
If you want to contact someone
you can Direct Message them – but
only if they are following you.
This is useful for quick
conversations – as you have to
keep within the 140 character limit
in your messages.
| 14
Direct message people
You can create a list of people with a
certain connection – for example
AHSNs, Care Homes, etc.
This can be useful if you want to send
messages or Tweet them.
In your profile select “lists” and
“Create new list”
Give it a name, then find people
Use the cog wheel to add them to your
list
| 15
Making a list
You can join in, or even host a Tweet
Chat
This is an allotted time when people
use a hashtag to have a shared
conversation.
Think Kidneys have used this and its
good for spreading the message and
getting instant feedback.
Try @WeNurses – follow them and
look out for advertised chats
| 16
Tweet chats
If you join in a chat it is helpful to
download something like “TweetDeck”
to follow the action.
As you become more proficient at
using Twitter, you may like to
download the App onto your phone –
that way you can keep the
conversation going whilst on the move.
Search the App store – available in
Apple and Android.
| 17
Twitter on the move
Set up your account
Personalise your profile
Start by following and watching
Move on to replying and retweeting
Start Tweeting
Join a Tweetchat
Download the app so you can Tweet on
the move.
| 18

Summary
Like Twitter, Facebook is best learned
by using it.
The most important thing you can do is
get started.
You really can’t make that many
mistakes.
Just remember to have fun and enjoy
the people you meet online.
LinkedIn
What is LinkedIn?
LinkedIn has often been referred to as
‘Facebook for Professionals’ which is not
necessarily accurate.
It has 300 million users and two new
accounts made every second
LinkedIn’s power lies in the ability to build
and nurture a robust professional network,
whilst you establish yourself as a thought
leader as well as learning from other
industry experts.
Getting Started
Complete the simple template
Click Join Now – or if you are on Facebook you
can use that option.
Your profile is one of the most important
aspects of
LinkedIn.
When planning your LinkedIn profile, it’s a
good idea to work out what your goal is. Are
you looking for a job?
Determining what you want from LinkedIn
before you start will help you tailor your
profile to the correct audience.
28.11.2014 | 34
Completing your profile
You will be prompted to add a
photograph and information about
yourself. The site will let you know
how complete your profile is. You can
choose to complete it all or skip and
come back to it later.
28.11.2014 | 35
Building your connections
For LinkedIn to say that your profile is 100%
complete, one of the requirements is at least 50
connections. That might sound like a lot, but really
it isn’t! Plus, LinkedIn’s search feature makes it
pretty easy to find people you know professionally.
First thing’s first, find the people you already know
by using the search bar, typing in their name, and
clicking the connect button next to their name.
LinkedIn will ask how you know this person and
give you a series of options, as well as a message
that you can send to them. It can be a good idea to
personalise the message rather than using the
generic one.
28.11.2014 | 36
Groups
LinkedIn groups are a great place to share
expertise, content and ask for advice from
industry experts as well as network with
others that share your interests. One of the
main reasons for joining LinkedIn is to
improve your online visibility; joining groups
and interacting with others within them is
one of the best ways to achieve visibility, as
well as growing your network.
To find groups that you will find interesting,
you can use LinkedIn’s search tool,
searching for a particular keyword or term,
toggling the menu on the left hand side and
clicking on ‘groups’. LinkedIn will then pull
together a list of relevant groups for you to
look through and find ones relevant to you.
28.11.2014 | 37
Companies
You can create a company page, which
people will be able to follow in order to
keep up to date with said company’s
products and services.
Many companies also advertise their jobs
through their company pages and
encourage potential applicants to apply
through LinkedIn.
If you would like to create a company
page, you need to meet a specific set of
requirements set out by LinkedIn,
including having a complete profile.
The site will guide you through a
template to add your company page.
28.11.2014 | 38
Updates
Very much like Facebook and Twitter,
you can post updates to your LinkedIn
profile which will then appear in your
connections’ home feeds. However, the
types of updates suitable for LinkedIn are
very different to the ones you may post
on Facebook and Twitter, given the
professional and formal nature of the
platform. It is wise to keep your updates
industry and professionally focused
You can also link your Twitter profile to
your LinkedIn account, meaning that
when you post to Twitter, it will
automatically post the same update to
LinkedIn.
28.11.2014 | 39
Set up your account
Personalise your profile
Make some connections
Move on to updating your status
Add a group or a company
| 40
Summary
Again, LinkedIn is best learned by using
it.

get started.
You really can’t make that many
mistakes.

the people you meet online.

Think kidneys social media guide

  • 1. Think Kidneys Guide to Social Media
  • 2. General rules for using social media Getting started with social media can feel like a daunting process. This guide shows you the sites you could use and how you could use them to reach more people. Just remember these simple rules: Be careful about the personal details you post online such as contact details, date of birth, your profession, your organisation. Such information could put you at risk of identity fraud. Do not say anything online that you would not say personally or wish others to hear – once you have posted it will be there forever. If you are posting about the Think Kidneys programme, make sure it’s accurate and in line with our messages. If you are in doubt contact one of the team to check. Have fun and enjoy the various platforms
  • 4. What is Twitter? Twitter is a form of social media You can network with millions of people - all around the world The world is on Twitter – from celebrities to business professionals, and people in all walks of life Organisations, companies and businesses all have Twitter accounts | 4
  • 5. | 5 Getting Started Set up your account Enter your name, email, and a password. Click Sign up You will now be taken to a second screen where can select a username. This is the name by which you will be known on Twitter.
  • 6. What name should you use? Your real name is best—if it’s available. If not, you can try using a middle initial or prefacing it with something like “the” or “real” “@TheJulieSlevin” or “@Real JulieSlevin” Use initial capital letters and in- word capitals. It will make your username more readable and memorable. For example: @JulieSlevin | 6 Your Twitter Name Barack Obama @BarackObama Cristiano Ronaldo @Cristiano Emma Watson @EmWatson Russell Brand @rustyrockets Ken Bruce @RealKenBruce
  • 7. Now click on the Create my account button. That’s it. You are now official a member of the Twitter community. Next, Twitter will help you to get started. It will explain what a tweet is and give you the opportunity to “follow” a few friends, popular people, or brands. You can opt out of these steps for now if you wish. Simply click the Skip this step link. Twitter will also give you a chance to see if some of your friends are on Twitter by checking your online address book. However, your contacts will have to be in one of the supported services: GMail, Hotmail, Yahoo, or AOL. Also, you’ll only see users who have allowed their accounts to be found by email address. | 7 You’re on Twitter
  • 8. Personalise your profile Go to your Twitter home page. Click on the Settings link. You should be on the Account tab. Set the time zone and make whatever other changes you want. Click the Save button. Now click on the Profile tab. Upload your picture – so people know you are real. Enter the rest of your information, including your location, website and a short biography, which can either be serious or fun, but it must be brief—no more than 160 characters. You can also connect your Twitter account to Facebook on this page. This will post all your Tweets directly to Facebook. (I don’t do this, but you may wish to) When you are finished, click the Save button. | 8
  • 9. Think Kidneys @ThinkKidneys Follow people you are interested in – colleagues, celebrities, politicians, friends, family Follow people who your friends follow Use the search bar to find people | 9 Who to follow
  • 10. You may prefer to start by simply watching what others are Tweeting about When people Tweet on a particular topic, they use hashtag to link the conversation #kidneys #dialysis Or special occasions, TV programmes and more #Christmas #strictly You can search using # in front of words to find topics | 10 Getting Started
  • 11. If you like something that someone says, you can “retweet” it. This will show on your timeline and anyone who follows you can see it. | 11 Take a dip
  • 12. | 12 Replying to people You can also use the Reply function to refer to someone by name. For example: I am going to #cnoconference with @KarenThomas111 The thing about replies is that they are “clickable links.” If someone who is following me, clicks on one of the names, they will automatically go to that person’s Twitter page. This will give them the opportunity to follow that person, too. You can reply to people. For example @ThinkKidneys I was also at #cnoconference Everyone who is following @ThinkKidneys and me will see the message, but I am specifically directing it to Think Kidneys. (Those who are not following both of us will not see the message.)
  • 13. Try a Tweet The main thing to remember is that your Tweet must be 140 characters or less. It should be something you would normally say. Its fine to start with something like: This is my first Tweet #firsttweet Or jump in with an announcement: Today I am at the #RCN conference in Birmingham Find # for any events and be sure to include it As long as you are sensible you cant say anything wrong | 13 Have a go at Tweeting
  • 14. If you want to contact someone you can Direct Message them – but only if they are following you. This is useful for quick conversations – as you have to keep within the 140 character limit in your messages. | 14 Direct message people
  • 15. You can create a list of people with a certain connection – for example AHSNs, Care Homes, etc. This can be useful if you want to send messages or Tweet them. In your profile select “lists” and “Create new list” Give it a name, then find people Use the cog wheel to add them to your list | 15 Making a list
  • 16. You can join in, or even host a Tweet Chat This is an allotted time when people use a hashtag to have a shared conversation. Think Kidneys have used this and its good for spreading the message and getting instant feedback. Try @WeNurses – follow them and look out for advertised chats | 16 Tweet chats If you join in a chat it is helpful to download something like “TweetDeck” to follow the action.
  • 17. As you become more proficient at using Twitter, you may like to download the App onto your phone – that way you can keep the conversation going whilst on the move. Search the App store – available in Apple and Android. | 17 Twitter on the move
  • 18. Set up your account Personalise your profile Start by following and watching Move on to replying and retweeting Start Tweeting Join a Tweetchat Download the app so you can Tweet on the move. | 18 Summary Twitter is best learned by using it. The most important thing you can do is get started. You really can’t make that many mistakes. Just remember to have fun and enjoy the people you meet online.
  • 20. What is Facebook? Facebook is another social network of people from all walks of life and from all over the world. It tends to be less formal and used more for fun. You can “like” people in a similar way to following on Twitter You can also be friends with people – where you can chat, share photos, etc. | 20
  • 21. Getting Started Go to www.facebook.com. If you see the signup form, fill out your name, email address or phone number, password, birthday and gender. If you don't see the form, click Sign Up, then fill out the form. Click Sign Up. Once you sign up, you'll need to confirm your email address or phone number. They send you either an email or a text message to help you confirm your account. | 21
  • 22. How it works Once you have created you can add a photo of yourself. Then you're ready to start posting a few updates. These updates are statements about what you're up to, links to interesting stuff you've seen elsewhere on the web - it's up to you. Here I have updated my status These people have “liked” it This is a “comment” 28.11.2014 | 22
  • 23. Friend Requests As word gets around that you're online, you'll find old friends start to get in touch. They may have heard about you being on Facebook or they may have found you after doing a search. You will be notified on the menu bar – the red number indicates how many people want to be your friend. You can choose to accept or decline the request. 28.11.2014 | 23
  • 24. Making Friend Requests You can search for people you know, then invite you to be friends. Put the name in the search bar Click “Add Friend” They will receive the request and then accept or reject your request If it is a company, product, celebrity etc. you can “like” them and you will receive updates which they post. 28.11.2014Acute Kidney Injury National Programme | Introducing the Think Kidneys campaign | Karen Thomas | 24
  • 25. Sharing on your newsfeed You can Like, Comment and/or Share something which you are interested in This will appear on your Timeline – so people can see what you are interested in. You can share on your timeline, or with individual friends 28.11.2014 | 25
  • 26. Notifications If you see a red number next to the globe, these indicate you have “notifications” or activity. It could be to tell you that people like your post, or maybe someone commented on something you posted. The speech bubbles are messages. 28.11.2014 | 26
  • 27. Messages You can use Facebook to chat to friends. You can chat with individuals, or a group. You can give the group a name. This is a great way to make plans etc. Click on the message icon, then “new message” Then choose who you want to send the message to and start your message. 28.11.2014 | 27
  • 28. Events You can use Facebook to create events. You can choose who to invite. It could be for one or two people, or to all of your friends, or even a public event. Click on the events Create New Event Complete the template Invite Friends Then click on Create Only people you have invited will be able to see the event. 28.11.2014 | 28
  • 29. Events When you receive an event invitation, you can choose how to respond. For private events you can say that you are Going, Cant Go – or Maybe. For public events you can say that you are Interested, Going, or you can chose to ignore the invitation. 28.11.2014 | 29
