Any & Some
Khouloud Khammassi
Introduction
We use “any” for questions (ex:“Do you have
any coffee?”) and negative answers (ex:“I
don’t have any coffee.”)
We use “some” for positive answers (ex:“I
have some coffee.”)
This means that if we make offers and requests,
and we apply the general rule outlined in the
previous slide, we would use “any.”
But, it’s not the case!
Offers and requests, in English, are made using
the question form. But, we use “some,” not “any.”
Examples
Regular questions to ask for information
We are not triggering an action; the ultimate goal is knowing information.
Do you have any juice? (uncountable noun in singular
form)
Do you have any bananas? (countable noun in plural)
Making an offer
Would you like some juice?
Would you like some bananas?
Making (Polite) Requests
Can I have some juice?
Can I have some bananas?
Notes
The examples outlined in this presentation show
that to ask for information and to make offers or
requests the grammatical structure is the same: the
question form (Verb + Subject + Object).
However, looking at the beginning of the sentence
(do you, does he, can you, would you, would you,
etc.) can help you know what you’re dealing with
and therefore use “any” or “some” accordingly.
