The Roots of Modern Nationalism and the Populist Backlash
The document analyzes the roots and characteristics of populism in Western nations by examining survey data on economic attitudes, national identity, attitudes toward diversity and immigration, and trust in the media and political establishment. It finds that supporters of populist parties tend to have more negative views of the economy, stronger national identity, more nativist views, and less trust in the media and political elites than others in their countries. Populist attitudes have also increased polarization in the media consumed by different political groups.
