The Mycenaeans settled the Greek mainland in the third millennium BCE. They built impressive houses and traded with Crete and the Aegean islands, though they were not originally Greek. During the Middle Helladic period after 2000 BCE, many Early Helladic sites were destroyed by fire. The Late Helladic period saw the rise of the Mycenaean civilization, most powerful from 1400-1200 BCE. This included major city-states like Pylos and kingdoms ruled by figures like the "Wanax."
