Editor's Notes

  • #3 Presentation about changing mindsets and delivering new information Future is not about technology – visions of jet pack Future is about people – HR professionals, people that deal with people
  • #4 Futurists we scan the environment and it is evident the world is changing Systems, tools, methods are starting to fail us Education (Laura Ingles, target example) Government Organizations – Industrial Age, hard to let go
  • #5 New age Not where we were, not where we are going In between A lot of people put things on hold (pre 2008) – things to go back to normal Not huge investments or new hires Can’t say exactly what it will be, but not like it was
  • #6 Military phrase Describe Afghanistan Also organizations
  • #7 Volatile – accelerated change Uncertain – don’t know what to expect Complex – can’t put the genie back in the bottle Ambiguous – don’t know variables Things are flipped on their heads Individuals have more power than ever before Globalization Changing Family More connected than ever before – global uprisings Multiple identities Life life online – avatars, virtual girlfriends Blurred reality – real/virtual All information doesn’t matter not like what we are used to, don’t judge, take it as a signal of what is emerging Any idea about future ridiculous… In the past in Industrial Age processes count widgets, factories, economies based on tangible goods, measurements really important, pretty good job forecasting historical data because not as much change and volatility No longer the case Moved from a tangible economy to intangible as source of value – PEOPLE, knowledge transfer, not just quantative statistics Era foresight, multiple futures, transformation important is critical and make organizations last
  • #8 In business world we hear a lot about wicked problems With VUCA environment, we want to look through the lens of wicked problems Wicked here is talking about complexity not evil, complexity without solution With everything intertwined, all of our issues have become complex issues with no easy solution. However, every solution we try to put in place to kill complexity creates more problems!
  • #9 Need a new mindset and platform to operate from
  • #10 Instead of operating from fear and risk, embrace complexity as a way to create new ideas, opportunities, innovations Can’t simplify complexity Complicated do to ourselves, complexity natural order of things Embrace, more mature Can’t put genie back in bottle Problems tie us to way things have always been Complexity doesn’t need to paralyze us. Age of Opportunity Dance with complexity
  • #11 New thinkers who leverage complexity instead of kill it, wicked talent
  • #12 The future is here not just evenly distributed, somewhere around globe someone doing something your not doing It is present to them but future to us Futurist scan the macro environment – STEEP Then see/imagine how those broad drivers of change impact our industries, organizations, ourselves as individuals We need to learn where to find the future Today we are going to look at 5 stories Stories critical part of foresight – change behavior, mindsets, immerse you in multiple futures without going through a trend report 5 actors/players – present the future that is emerging , learn what is happening and potentially arrive as the future of talent
  • #13 Papavich Serbian computer scientist Co-creator game foldit Anyone heard of foldit? Game video tell you more Scientists and doctors stumped – 10 years behavior of protien in AIDS virus How they fold is important to solve issues like AIDS Last effort, create game and opened it to the public
  • #15 Non scientists Took one week to solve something that took scientists and doctors 10 years – stumped Educated incapacity – all suffer from, me too Know so much about what know, last to know things changing Look outside our organization and industry Embracing diversity on teams Collaborating Seeking thought partners You know too much like scientists Gamers went in safe environment, not break anything, not fail, hit reset, invulnerability Gamified, more points
  • #16 Reealeanee Uruguayan Entrepreneur Co-founder – Ironhide Game Studio Created game called Kingdom Rush Pablo and team story – journey When decided to form company, he loved playing games but didn’t even own a MAC And decided to make an app Launched this effort Worked out of home in room called Dungeon, a couple at first Success – how launched game on app store then went on vacation because sick of seeing each other, app store didn’t update during the holidays, released it and left, few days into vacation get email with screenshot that they beat the angry birds app Group from Uruguay, young, not a great economic or educational system – SELF TAUGHT Approached with Strategic partnership offers Rovio – creators of Angry Bird Flew them to Finland – took pictures with the birds Into conference room, 3 sit there write number sign on board and walks out Not strategic partners, instead a buy out Enough money set them all up for life What did they do? Turned it down Wanted to make games and do what they love
  • #19 Jack Andraka 15 year old high school student Invented 5 dollar detection test Used google and wikipedia Information available to anyone and anytime World of opportunity Intel promo, gave Jack an award, but good overview
  • #21 26 times less expensive Jack is the future of talent Open environment, open health, medical advancements
  • #22 Australian Anthropologist Works at Intel, a cultural anthropoligist Microsoft, US Government – people realize that we need qualitative measures She studies how people use technology and experience technology Family of anthropologist and ethnographers, field study of villages in Australia
  • #23 Current project, strangers, empty content of car People use tech in the car Voice recognition, hands free – people still use regular technology Intel works with suppliers to introduce new info in system – QUALITATIVE data Intel missed movement to mobile in chips, Genevive 15 years, important Leads foresight team
  • #25 Leo Grand Homeless guy in New York App – Trees for Cars – Commuter App Video (5 minutes long) – long but insight into story Leo – Homeless Patrick – saw him on way to work (coder and app developer), won’t pass him anymore, do something, offered Leo two options 1) $100 right now and walk away or 2) tomorrow cheap laptop and coding books and teach you how to code Leo chose coding, about both of them, changed by story
  • #26 Leo Coder Video Latam.wmv video plays here
  • #27 Facebook page – mid way through arrested for loitering took lap top, Google people stepped in, people helped out, released quickly but wouldn’t let go laptop Movement for housing
  • #28 These five stories are amazing, we see people who don’t suffer from educated incapacity, are able to learn-unlearn-relearn, lead holistic lives of passion and purpose, embrace qualitative/human metrics, undiscovered talent
  • #29 Thinking of the future of talent requires a new measurement, new rules 3 rules critical to being successful in 21st century, individual level or organizational
  • #31 Sounds crazy for a futurist to say
  • #32 How do these stories of the future of talent compare with our existing narrative? War on talent? War on…, crisis, generational warefare…Risk, our language, scarcity Gap, education, all true at some level, but this DEFINES WHAT WE CAN SEE Beauty of futures work, aware of filtration, all have filter, natural, not go crazy, like it keep it, don’t discard it Futures thinking enlarge the filtration system
  • #33 Let’s look at an example Acclimate you to the graph (life expectancy on Y and fertility rates on x), every circle different country, size of the bubble is population, color – region of the world Developed countries we see longer life, smaller family size SHOW GAPMINDER.ORG Same data we looked at, the data on the slide was actually from 1950, play out what actually looks like This is what has happened since 1950, world is much different, only country left out from left high life expectancy and low fertility is Sub-Saharan Africa (AIDS, war) Developed and developing together China bounced up and down illness, conflict, war In 1950, most of the so-called "developing countries" had more than 5 children per women and less than 50 years of life expectancy. Today, in most of the world, women have less than 3 and life expectancy is over 65 years. Any attempt to divide the countries of the world into two groups, such as "developing and developed countries" will be an over-simplification.
  • #34 Hans Rosling does a lot of data visualization Research home country of Sweden on literacy rates of developing nations The crazy thing is not that people got the answers wrong but they gave the correct answer from 25 years ago! Get stuck in old mental models, hung up on Analytics big data – we tend to rely on numbers blindly – we want people to be more creative but without spreadsheet we don’t let them move forward, leaders, don’t know how to make decision without black and white answer We need to remember to see larger patterns forming, Humans make patterns better than computer, amazing at making sense of things
  • #35 Since Industrial Age, been in the habit of siloing, specializing to get efficient at process Works with tangible goods, but in VUCA environment – can’t silos, crazy and suicide! Org chart
  • #36 Concept of assembly line, birth of structure organizations Came from slaughter house, Henry ford first advisers (OD), goes into slaughter house and saw specialization of tasks, how make cars, now our organizations Does that really make sense?
  • #37 Move past silo and discipline concept Institutions new degrees mixing disciplines Knowledge free- move away from certification – reputation (sophomore learns by graduation is obsolete) Transdisciplinary (mesh disciplines, emerges is sweet spot, to solve big world problems) a lot of these problems came from siloing More than synergy – not just representatives of all departments and functions, this is new structures departments created We have organizations architecting serendipitous interaction to make these intersections happen Post-discipline – does not define us Young person live beyond 100 – different world
  • #38 Example – Form an independent company Volunteer time work for NASA and IBM Passion to make this come to life, unsiloing
  • #40 Can’t keep making the screen bigger or changing the color – doesn’t work Must be transformative Can’t do same things used to. Oil crisis, dig for more, ball of energy Enamered with way solve problems, new solution beating down like the sun, we don’t see it
  • #41 Who’s transformative right now? Nike is not a shoe company, quantified self, quantify everything about us – walk, eat, etc. always in DNA, seek out higher order purpose, still shoes but more Google – acquiring robot companies – smart homes and cities? Search engine (find data and information on net) close to utility as anything – broadband Nintendo – not just gaming but health industry Toyota – not just cars but overall mobility Uber hiring engineers to get into autonomous vehicles What does that mean for your organization? What is your higher order purpose? All about hacking – beyond negative connotation, mindset, HIRE HACKERS, DON”T NEED INSTRUCTION MANUAL Stories how might future of talent present itself – PLAYFUL, Open, - who can we hire, who is our talent?, PASSIONETTE (work tirelessly) Not copy Google, needs to be in culture – Not move on surface level for long time, speak to them at CORE level, rethink approach to talent, UNQUALIFIED – resume not sole source of recruitment, learn-unlearn-relearn, more important, HUMAN – future about people, qualitative metrics, happiness of people – Social Progress Index, holistic, UNDISCOVERED, ubiquitous, talent within walls, intraprenurship, have potential Up to you to rethink work through patterns/making sense, meshing, and transforming, hack, disrupt
