• What is a banksman?
 Person responsible for the safe
control of equipment, vehicles and
pedestrians
• Banksman is one of the most important
jobs on the site.
Roles of banksman

• Not having a banksman can result in…

Qualifications of a banksman

Responsibilities of Banksmen
• Everyone’s safety through proper vehicle/equipment control.

Hazards: Heavy Equipment

equipment around you.

equipment.

Hazards: Moving Vehicles
• Take care of the movement of the
vehicle.
• Keep a safe distance from the
vehicle.
• Always pay attention to the vehicle.
• Do not turn your back to the vehicle.

• Do not be distracted.
• Do not allow distracted persons to work
around heavy equipment/ vehicles.
• Act responsibly and practice safe behavior
when using your Phone.

Vehicle/ Equipment
• The shaded areas represents the danger zone or “no-
go- zone”.
• The vehicle operator’s view of pedestrian is greatly
reduced or obscured altogether.

• You must know blind areas around the vehicle.
• Light grey is difficult to see and darker area is out of sight of drive.

• Another banks man must be provided if the load goes out of
sight. Sometimes you need two flagmen!

• The position where the banksman stands
is crucial.
• Stand in a place where you can make
eye contact with the operator.

• Try to avoid reversing. If you have to make it a
place where reversing can be carried out safely.
• The distance over which vehicles have to
reverse is minimized.
• All parking on-site is reverse parking.

• Pedestrians are also your responsibility.
 Help them to cross the road.
 Pedestrians have right of way over vehicles.

• Do not allow pedestrians from:
 areas where vehicles will reverse
 walking along road ways – make them
use walkways instead.

ROLL OVER PREVENTION
&TIPPER TRUCK CONTROL

• The exclusion zone for tipper truck loading/unloading is 25m.
Exclusion Zones
• Banksman must remain outside the ‘controlled’ area during tipping
operations or maintain a minimum ‘safe zone’ of 25 meters. Keep all
personnel away from ’controlled’ area(s).

Tipper Truck Control
• banksman instructs the driver to
commence unloading by raising his
Green Flag.

• Ensure the tipper bed tailgate is opening smoothly.

• If load is stuck or gate is not opening
correctly, raise red flag and blow whistle.
STOP ALL OPERATIONS.

• Watch to see if tipper truck gate condition is securely closed during
loading operations, and opens correctly for unloading.
• Check that the load is evenly distributed across the tipper box, if load
sticks STOP WORK and lower bed.

• Never climb a vehicle to clear
a stuck load.

• Green Flag raised, vehicle can move 2
meters forward to clear the discharged
materials.

• When tipper body is fully lowered the
banksman will then signal the driver
Green flag the vehicle may leave.

• Supervisor must be in charge of this work at all times.


• Never allow anyone to stand or walk behind or
close to machines or tippers.
• If reversing, loading, unloading, or any other
operation condition is unsafe:
 STOP the activity
 Blow the whistle and RAISE RED FLAG

• No overloading of tipper trucks!

• Two trucks are not allowed to tip together side by side. They should
be at least 25 meters apart.

• Drivers must not leave their vehicles while raising or lowering tipper
boxes.

• Trucks are only allowed to dump on flat, even compacted ground.

• Articulated tipper trucks must be tipped with the cab and trailer in
line.

Case Study 1
Incident Location: Ras Laffan 2009
• A banksman died when he tried to stop motor grader from
reversing into a vehicle. The grader began to reverse. The
banksman ran over, waving his flag. He fell down and was
run over.
Lesson: Do not put yourself in harms way and Do not let vehicles park
in other vehicles blind spot

• While, asphalt work was in progress, the victim was making line
joint of asphalt. While roller was reversing the operator did not
see the man.

• In 2009, a loader at Berth Area civil works, after dumping soil,
reversed and flipped over.
Cause:
• Uneven working area and banksman not with machine at time of
incident.

• In 2009, in Ras Laffan a trailer tipper truck was unloading materials.
While raising the bucket, the tipper truck tipped over. No injury.
Cause:
• Load not distributed evenly in the tipper box.
