Telling Your Story for Effect and Affect

  • 1. + Why are you telling this story? Identify what details are essential for getting your message across. Set aside everything else. Who are you talking to? What are their interests? How can they learn from you, and you from them? It's up to you to meet your audience where they are. TELLING TELLING YOUR STORY YOUR STORY Storytelling starts with you. What unique view do you have to offer? What do you know? What do you not know? Why does this story matter to you? GET TO THE POINT. Leah Henrickson (COMM2715, 2022) WHO ARE YOU? FOR EFFECT AND AFFECT WHO ARE THEY? What language and tone are appropriate for your audience? Will you launch right into your point, or make people work for it? How can you ensure that your story sounds consistently like you? What media might complement your story? Links? Images? Videos? Good ol' paper? What will your story sound like, if anything? Where will your audience be, and what will they expect? SHOW TELL By telling your story, you're giving a part of yourself to other people. You're also creating a space for others to give parts of themselves. Good storytelling is never one-way. Embrace those connections. Storytelling makes us all stronger. SHARE, CONNECT, EMPOWER
