The brochure describes the fluoride-free TANTALOX® process invented and patented by Dr. François Cardarelli which is used commercially by Electrochem Technologies & Materials Inc. since 2016 for the commercial production of tantalum, niobium, tungsten oxides and niche chemicals at its facilities in Boucherville, Quebec, Canada (Canadian Patent 2,849,787 C).
Presently, two industrial processes are used in the United States, Europe, and Asia for producing tantalum(V) oxide (Ta2O5) and niobium(V) oxide (Nb2O5):
[1] The K-Salt process extracts Ta2O5 and Nb2O5 from tantalite, columbite, and microlite. It consists to digests feedstocks in hot concentrated HF-H2SO4 followed by the separation of tantalum, niobium, and impurities by solvent extraction using methyl-isobutyl ketone (MIBK). The use of HF and MIBK pose serious EH&S issues, and unless HF is recycled, it generates up to 7 tonnes of toxic fluoride sludge per tonne of ore processed.
[2] The Thermite-Chlorination process produces Nb2O5 from pyrochlore with tantalum(V) chloride (TaCl5) as co-product. First, the process produces ferroniobium by aluminothermic reduction. Secondly, the milled Fe-Nb alloy undergoes chlorination in a molten salt bath made of NaFeCl4. The separation of niobium from tantalum is achieved by fractional distillation of the volatiles metal chlorides. Finally, Nb2O5 is produced by hydrolysis of niobium(V) chloride (NbCl5) with ammonia.
By comparison, the key advantages of the fluoride-free TANTALOX® process are:
✅ Fluoride-free process: No hydrofluoric acid (HF)
✅ No solvent extraction (SX)
✅ Caustic fusion (600°C-800°C) and alkaline processing using KOH or NaOH
✅ Simple processing route for tantalite, columbite, pyrochlore, and microlite
✅ Processing industrial by-products: carbide sludge, tin slags, and residues
✅ The recycling of water and chemicals ensures a low environmental footprint
✅ High recoveries (+98%) for Ta2O5 and Nb2O5
✅ Low CAPEX and OPEX
✅ Production of tantalum, niobium and tungsten oxides
✅ Upgraded tantalum oxide (UGTO) and upgraded niobium oxide (UGNO)
✅ Cesium tungstate, tungsten, tin, zirconium, hafnium, and rare earths oxides as co-products
✅ Only refinery of its kind in Canada
✅ Sourcing conflict-free materials
✅ Supply, logistics, marketing and sales secured by traders
