Editor's Notes

  1. When we were assigned to the task we considered it to be a real professional challenge to introduce enjoyable teaching and learning with tablets in primary school. Average school with average pupils taking part in an exceptionally innovative project means that success could be transferred elsewhere too!
  2. We introduced the project to teachers some of which have already volunteered to take part and others were just sorry not to have registered in time. Regular school classrooms do not have computers, so teachers were quite differentiated in terms of ICT use. The main part of the project aimed at 5th grade, but some other single courses were also included.
  3. We needed time to set up the environment, so we invited the classes to take part in an international competition on computational thinking that would also serve as a pre-test for pupils involved in the project. Looking forward to next year’s results!
  4. We set up the Edu 2.0 (which was translated to Hungarian by T@T lab), where a mentoring class for teachers and all the participating school subjects received a class platform with Web 2.0 tools needed for full classroom management.
  5. Teachers received their own tablets, which we have configured beforehand to contain a bunch of cool tools (apart from industry pre-installations) that we considered as necessary for the introductory phase of the project.
  6. We chose Edu 2.0 as a universal platform to upload learning materials, design classes, prepare activities, link or embed resources, define home-works, grade and evaluate tasks, reflect on activities, communicate and organize school-work accessible from any device.
  7. Samsung has refurbished a small castle to create Smart School, where about half of the sessions from the selected courses were held, walking over from regular school to the specially equipped two classrooms with interactive board and full network with WIFI access. The other half were held traditionally in the school itself.
  8. The tablets have a very suitable configuration for school-work, with an exclusive pen and built-in S-note application, allowing note taking by typing, handwriting and drawing as well, making it a perfect tool for creating digital copy-books among other things.
  9. Andrea was responsible for preparing teachers on spot. She visited all classes to explore the methodologies used by teachers, consulted with them on their expectations and fears and gave them personalized training as well as group sessions as start-out. The first day of digital classes were held in the library with the other teachers watching on and discussing later on experiences.
  10. Marta was responsible for the on-line platform and mentoring as well as the pedagogic leader of the project. The ongoing continuation of the project required that teachers design their classes before-hand and received advises on-line for possible uses of different resources, leaving the decision and adaption to them, after which they would write their reflections on experiences.
  11. Scheduling was very tight indeed! There was only a month to prepare for the first classes to be held, with about 9-10 on-spot contact days to prepare teachers for the on-line mentoring spreading throughout the project, making additional single visits once a month.
  12. Digital classes in Smart School started on 25th of November and the requirement for teachers’ preparedness was quite tough, as some were not at all fluent in technology use, but all of them were very motivated indeed to aim at success.
  13. We were determined to make the project a success too, supporting teachers to be able to integrate tools and resources fulfilling course objectives and deepening children's’ thinking skills from lower order to higher order in line with Bloom’s Taxonomy.
  14. Just after a month of introduction we sat down together to evaluate the project and come up with possible solutions on problems encountered. After the initial phase technology classes would serve as basic support for digital literacy of children.
  15. The introductory phase went quite well and teachers made a remarkable progress after which the Smart School was often visited by outsiders to witness the “good practices” attained and teachers were asked to prepare some videos of their classes as illustrations.
  16. Just after 3 months of holding half of the class sessions in the Smart School these videos show evidence of teachers’ full confidence with ICT use under any emerging circumstances and illustrate children as natural users of all tools in their environment. ICT rich activities enabled children to enjoy learning, deepen their knowledge while exploring interactives.
  17. Teachers took the videos while giving the class, which proves that they are indeed confident users, trusted in their abilities to tame technology as partner in the enhanced teaching process. We hearby thank the support from the school principle, municipality, whole community and Samsung itself. We enjoyed taking part in the project, making children reconsider the joy of learning.
