  1. A few words about ViMLoC – how it started and why; 105 members through our list serve; 60 members through Face Book; 65 members through LinkedIn; 38 followers on Twitter. There will be some overlap between these forums among members. ViMLoC is for all librarians interested in minority librarianship. There is no fee to join; It is for all librarians – public, school, special, and academic. I really would like to see participation from librarians from different sectors.
  2. Whats in ViMLoC Page or what we post on there Two librarians Yanli Li from Wilfred Laurier University; and Valentina Ly, a new graduate from U of A have been working on formal mentorship program and will be presenting their findings at CAPAL 2019 in Vancouver. We cannot report anything about this yet.
  3. Talk about how ViMLoC helped us Networking – finding peers – talk about issues, to know there are others like you, etc Collaborate - to collaborate on research activities, run ideas by, etc Mentoring - I also mentored another minority librarian through her final year of MLIS degree until she found a library position
  4. From a study done in 2014 by Maha Kumaran and Heather Cai: Identifying the visible minority librarians of Canada: A National Survey. It was a study done to capture the demographics. This was the first study that aimed to learn more about the visible minority demographics in Canadian librarianship. This was not limited to academic librarians (all visible minority librarians from all library sectors participated in this survey)
  5. Sabbatical project data: This study was limited to Academic librarians in Canada What is your ethnocultural background (list of options) from Stats Canada. Included Mixed Origin; and If your identity is different from those listed above, please specific (Other Box)
  6. Ask audience what they think of the demographic picture? What does it look like at your library? Is it reflective of what you might see in your library?
  7. Next steps – we do not have conferences and scholarships that focus on minority librarians; research workshops to help build their confidence in writing; mentorship training opportunities other than ViMLoC; Leadership training. We want to know if you are aware of any opportunities that we may not know of (specifically in Canada)
  8. April Hathcock scholarly communications librarian at New York University set off an uncomfortable debate among fellow librarians about the racial views and values of the American Library Association after sharing that she was verbally attacked by a white colleague at an ALA meeting
  9. What do you think of this incident? What thoughts occur in your mind? What do you think of this in a Canadian context? If it happens at your library or somewhere you are present, will you speak up? Why yes, or Why no? What needs to be done to avoid something like this in Canada – training? Diversity awareness? Some issues that have come up in minority library literature – feelings of isolation; lack of mentorship (which pitfalls or land mines to avoid); which battles to pick and which ones to save for later (to publish); tokenism, lack of support or the impression of lack of support, (preparing for tenure or permanent position)
