This week's lesson will review theories of first language acquisition and compare them to theories of second language acquisition. Key theories to be discussed include behaviorism, cognitive perspectives, Chomsky's theory of generative grammar and universal grammar. Students will review first language development as a group and map key elements of second language acquisition theories in cooperative groups. Krashen's five hypotheses of second language acquisition will also be introduced, including the acquisition-learning hypothesis, natural order hypothesis, monitor hypothesis, input hypothesis, and affective filter hypothesis.
