finds the right granularity for metadata meaning.
• Support for book values but
Names before key name
isn’t appropriate for mail merge
(mail merge is not a book requirement).

Actual use of metadata determines a lot
Standards
Actual use of metadata determines a lot
• No one can make you change
(As long a major trading partners accept what you give them.)
Standards
Actual use of metadata determines a lot
• No one can make you change
(As long a major trading partners accept what you give or take.)
• The least-possible-change rules actual use
(Including using ONIX 3.0 that maintains ONIX 2.1 as its model.)

BiblioShare’s data shows senders and
their support services are increasingly
cavalier about adhering to standards.
A recipe for
increased costs
Standards
BiblioShare’s data shows senders and
their support services are increasingly
cavalier about adhering to standards.
A recipe for
increased costs
Publishers cite the need to support as many
as ten flavours of ONIX.
Standards
Standards work when their application
achieves a business goal.
Which requires coordination within
the industry that includes
• Matching a standard
• Setting priorities
Do we maximize value?
A recipe for
decreased costs
Publishers produce fewer better
quality flavours of data.
Retailers improve sale support by
predictable data use.
Contributor Place
Why are granular data points important?
An author can be associated with more than one place
and live in a different country than his nationality.
Regionality is specific to more than one region,
for more than one reason.
Contributor Place
ONIX 2.1 supports the CanCon marker as single unit.
Canada shares the least-possible-change malaise
as many assume single instance is
“good enough” because it “works in 2.1.”
This ignores experience that tells us a usable piece
of metadata can’t mean two things.
Regionality
A usable system needs to able to
associate a region
with a focused (granular) intent.
Data supported at optimal granularity
saves time and money.
Standards
Basic bibliographic data,
handled meaningfully and consistently,
matters more now.
Standards
The Canadian supply chain should be talking too.
(Do we need to talk about if there is one?)
Do you have
• problems differentiating feeds to Amazon.CA/.COM?
• problems providing split CA/US markets
– with US trading partners?
– with international trading partners?
Thank you

  • 16. Standards BiblioShare’s data shows senders and their support services are increasingly cavalier about adhering to standards. A recipe for increased costs Publishers cite the need to support as many as ten flavours of ONIX.
  • 17. Standards Standards work when their application achieves a business goal. Which requires coordination within the industry that includes • Matching a standard • Setting priorities Do we maximize value? A recipe for decreased costs Publishers produce fewer better quality flavours of data. Retailers improve sale support by predictable data use.
  • 18. Contributor Place Why are granular data points important? An author can be associated with more than one place and live in a different country than his nationality. Regionality is specific to more than one region, for more than one reason.
  • 19. Contributor Place ONIX 2.1 supports the CanCon marker as single unit. Canada shares the least-possible-change malaise as many assume single instance is “good enough” because it “works in 2.1.” This ignores experience that tells us a usable piece of metadata can’t mean two things.
  • 20. Regionality A usable system needs to able to associate a region with a focused (granular) intent. Data supported at optimal granularity saves time and money.
  • 21. Standards Basic bibliographic data, handled meaningfully and consistently, matters more now.
  • 22. Standards The Canadian supply chain should be talking too. (Do we need to talk about if there is one?) Do you have • problems differentiating feeds to Amazon.CA/.COM? • problems providing split CA/US markets – with US trading partners? – with international trading partners?

Editor's Notes

  1. A cacophony of regionality and inclusion -- I used to think you can tell jokes using XML but now I believe the future of humour is in keyword lists. All going to plan I’ll leave 4 minutes at the end for questions but talk to me later or get in touch at work.
  2. Hi, I’m Tom Richardson, BookNet Canada’s Bibliographic Manager and this is the 2019 Standards review. Standards are embedded in everything we do at BookNet. This slide has some of the standards we participate directly in on the left and organizations that we work particularly close with on the right. Several staff serve on BISG committees and Noah Genner, our CEO is a member ONIX and Thema international Steering Committees.
  3. And our bibliographic committee acts as the Canadian national group (English language) for ONIX and a separate subcommittee functions for Thema. We’re available to work with the Canadian Supply Chain on their standards needs
  4. BISG, the Book Industry Study Group, our US based sister organization has had an interesting year. After completing 3 metadata summits, one for data suppliers, a second for data users, the third joint summit ended without clarifying support for the development of ONIX 3.0 in their supply chain. I recommend anyone interested should review the minutes of all three summits, but one outcome was a reorganization of their Metadata Committee, and a new committee was struck, Workflow. I can’t speak for BISG but my summary is that the Metadata Committee has been given a marketing focus – it’s being tasked to identify things needed for development -- and Workflow will review the trading of information within and between organizations.
  5. ONIX is not dead as a standard Let me stress that -- this does NOT mean ONIX is dead. The work that EDItEUR does is invaluable and we’d be mad to not to continue to utilize them as a resource. Another thing to stress:
  6. You still need to support the Canadian author marker
  7. And you need to starting tracking where authors live. Another industry change is a request to start supporting metadata to track author’s home towns – where they would be available for publicity and events. Libraries and retailers throughout North America as well as publicists would like that. One of the main points of this presentation to demonstrate that these two are distinct.
  8. EDItEUR’s work, and ONIX as a publishing resource, finds the right granularity for metadata meaning. Hopefully some of you have attended a past ONIX workshop one, or will attend tomorrow’s, so you know that EDItEUR prides itself on providing just the right amount of granularity – breaking down the metadata just enough for flexibility and full support without going too far. Their classic example is the contributor composite, the core is illustrated here, which uses key names, the name group that should be indexed. It’s supported by 4 other name parts.
  9. 3 ways to support titles and honours
  10. A pragmatic alternative is provided in “person name” two versions of single field name – though clearly parsing names is recommended. And “corporate name” so you can name contributors that are not people.
  11. Names before key name can include both of what we call first and middle names so it isn’t actually a good option to support mail merge use. Careful EDItEUR cannot identify a need for that in book metadata. That’s a value too far. All that was to illustrate that EDItEUR thinks it through, does their homework, asks national groups for input, supports only what’s really necessary – for books. Then looks at the results over time because they don’t always get it right – and that explains many tweaks in ONIX 3.0. Your company’s metadata is independent but should go through a similar process. But Contributor has existed in this form for over 15 years because it works. But even after all that time 10% of current ONIX data submissions to BIblioShare don’t support key name values.
  12. Actual use of metadata determines an awful lot. I’m pleased to say that Canadian metadata remains better than average. Lots of you use 3.0 a good number, can use it for both print and digital – even though there’s no real use of 3.0 in print yet. Indigo estimates next year they’ll have support for it. But even allowing for our supply chain being 90% foreign metadata, based on what I see in BiblioShare , Canada included, many companies’, metadata philosophy --- sender or receiver -- might be distilled
  13. No one can make you change As long as major trading partners will accept you not changing
  14. The least--possible--change rules actual use And that includes using ONIX 3.0 that maintains 2.1 as its model. Many of those tweaks EDItEUR added to improve 3.0 are surprisingly hard to find in use.
  15. This is a recipe for increased costs BiblioShare allows me to see data from single accounts and how they work together as an aggregate. I can say that publishers and their support services are increasingly cavalier about adhering to standards. True story: A publisher and their major data supplier, have a need to communicate information between themselves about distributing the metadata – a value is needed in the file to direct that individual records. They chose to use Sales Restriction. That’s’ fine but I know about because they distribute their internal need in their ONIX feed. I don’t expect people to just know this, but there is no proprietorial marker to say ignore Sales Restriction any more than there is one for Supply Detail, Title or Contributor. If you use it in an open feed, it means the ISBN has a sales restriction. There is limited but real use in feeds – maybe a couple of thousand records in BiblioShare -- that are now being buried in a proprietorial conversation 20 times larger.
  16. Publisher cite the need to support as many as ten flavours of ONIX (plus other formats) As far as I know the only reason that flavours of ONIX are needed is because end users don’t program to fully select a value. If they did then sending options wouldn’t be a problem. But then, a lot of publishers don’t provide all the things an end user would need to fully select data for every situation --- Does that sound circular? It probably is. And no ONIX police enforcing anything. You choose
  17. A recipe for decreased costs Standards work when they achieve a business goal. Data comes in this way and gets displayed or used that way. The effect should be mutually beneficial. Incoming’s intent and outgoing use match the standard’s. I’ll swing back to coordination at the end, but let’s get back to Contributor Place
  18. Why are granular data points important? An author can live in a different country than their nationality. Or might live in more than one place. If you supply a single value it’s not clear which of them you meant. And you might even have a trading partner who needs information about one of the other 6 very normal book region code values available in Contributor Place. Let me broaden my point to say Regionality, as a concept and publishing need, can be applied to more the one region -- for more than one reason. Why should there be any confusion that we need multiple data points? I think there’s really one main reason
  19. ONIX 2.1 supports the same value a singular event. The Canadian publishing supply chain shares the least--possible--change malaise that drives US metadata. Our go to standard isn’t based on need, it’s based on what’s “good enough” because it “works in ONIX 2.1” even where we never asked that 2.1 track the data point. And the perception that the US has rejected 3.0 let’s off the hook of development because we can’t fight the elephant.
  20. A usable system needs to able to associate a region with a focused (granular) intent. Generalized – Data supported at optimal granularity saves time and money. If you can’t reliably use the information – there’s no author findable for an event (when they exist); Or your authors are not reliably identified and supported as a Canadian author, the investment you made in time and money is wasted
  21. As I’ve said Canadian data is good, and I’ve tried to illustrate that good metadata can be buried by bad and indifferent metadata. Most of the companies represented in this room do data well. But maybe what’s meant is that EDItEUR’s systematic, closely defined, integrated system needs discussion to be implemented in a supply chain.
  22. The Canadian supply should be talking too. I’m curious: I can tell by the way the metadata is handled that the Canadian market is handled as a secondary add-on to the US…. Our market is about basic as it gets Do you have problems differentiating feeds to Amazon.CA/.COM? problems providing split CA/US markets
  23. Thank you. If you’re interested in participating in committees get in touch. The break will be from 3:20 to 3:35 – If you haven’t signed up for a headshot, check your badge where you’’ll find instructions
