This document defines and describes various types of software. It discusses utilities, file management software, peripheral drivers, print drivers, package software, generic software, integrated software, applications software, specific software, bespoke software, word processing software, spreadsheet software, macros, database software, presentation software, web browser software, bookmarks, email facilities, search software, reply software, file attachments, and website design software.

Utilities- is a program that performs a very specific task. Utilities are not
regarded as applications because they are fairly simple and only perform one
specific task. examples are file converters( used to save files in different
formats) ,virus scanners , security and accounting
File management software- provided as part of system software, performs
file/folder organisation ,back up copy creation, file compression.
Peripheral drivers : A computer device, such as a CD-ROM drive or printer, that
is not part of the essential computer, i.e., the memory and microprocessor.
Peripheral devices can be external -- such as a mouse, keyboard, printer,
monitor, external Zip drive or scanner -- or internal, such as a CD-ROM drive,
CD-R drive or internal modem. Internal peripheral devices are often referred
to as integrated peripherals.
Print drivers-A program that controls a printer. Whenever you print a
document, the printer driver takes over, feeding data to the printer with the
correct control commands. Most modern operating systems come with printer
drivers for the most common types of printers, but you must install them
before you can use the printer. You can also download updated drivers from
the printer manufacturer's Web site.

Package software-a bundle of files necessary for a particular program to run along with some
form of documentation to help a user get the program started.
Generic software-Generic software is a programme used to instruct a computer on how to
perform a specified task.
Integrated software -A collection of computer programs designed to work together to handle
an application, either by passing data from one to another or as components of a single
system. A collection of computer programs that work as a unit with a unified command
structure to handle several applications, such as word processing, spread sheets, data-base
management, graphics, and data communications.
Applications software-Application software is all the computer software that causes a
computer to perform useful tasks (compare with computer viruses) beyond the running of
the computer itself. A specific instance of such software is called a software application,
program, application or app.
Specific software -Software which are used only for specific purposes are called specific
purpose application software. For example, accounting software (like Tally, Busy, etc.),
custom made software (like payroll, billing, reservation, etc.).
Bespoke software-bespoke software is software customized for a specific purpose. Bespoke
programs may include custom accounting software for a certain company or a network
monitoring tool for a specific network.

• Spread sheet software-Computer programs
(e.g. Excel, Lotus) that have efficient and
accurate methods of working with numbers.
They are used to perform a wide variety of
simple to complex calculations, and offer
charting and graphing capabilities.

• Macros- A symbol, name, or key that represents a list of
commands, actions, or keystrokes. Many programs allow
you to create macros so that you can enter a single
character or word to perform a whole series of actions
• Database software-Computer programs designed to store
large amounts of data and allow for quick and efficient
searching, retrieving, sorting, revising, analysing, and
ordering. There are two common types of databases: flat
file databases and relational databases
• Presentation software-A presentation program is a
computer software package used to display information,
normally in the form of a slide show

• Web browser software-Software that allows a user to locate, view,
and access information from World Wide Web sites via the use of a
graphical interface (e.g. Internet Explorer and Mozilla).
• Favourites and bookmarks-A shortcut to an Internet site that is
stored and accessed via a web browser (also called a "favourite").
• Email facilitates- Electronic messages, typically addressed as
person-to-person correspondence, which are transmitted between
computers and across networks
• Search-Software that searches for specific information or files on
the Internet using search criteria that is entered.
• Reply-software that enables you to send back a message received

• File attachments-A file attached to an e-mail
message. Many e-mail systems only support
sending text files as e-mail.
• Website design software- Web design is skill of
creating graphical presentation of content
(usually through hypertext and hypermedia)
shown on the web in the form of web sites
and other web applications using different
types of media
