It enables them to engage in social networking
Individuals from different geographical locations can easily
share information
Social media enable people to easily connect and interact
Social media are the various applications and websites that
individuals can use to create and share information with others
(Burgess & Burgess, 2013). Among the most popular social
media applications are Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram among
others.

Importance of Companies Embracing Social Media
Social media have a variety of benefits for companies that
embrace them
1. Brand Awareness
Each company wants its brand to be known
Social media make this possible through digital marketing
It exposes the company to a huge audience
Social media are important for companies because they enable
them to achieve brand awareness (Al-Deen & Hendricks, 2012).
Companies that use social media are able to reach a large
audience and market the brands.

Social media are important because they enable companies to
achieve cost-effectiveness
It is cheaper to market through social media than through any
other means
The company only needs to sponsor its page once
It is also cost effective to use social media as a marketing tool
as compared to other marketing strategies. A company can only
create a single marketing message and share it across various
social media platforms. The message can be viewed across the
world at no additional costs. This makes social media an
important tool because it enables companies to minimize costs
(Burgess & Burgess, 2013).

Companies can use different social media platforms to advertise
their products
Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram and effective platforms to
achieve this
They allow companies to provide detailed information about
their products
Social media provide an important platform on which companies
can advertise their products. Depending on the specific products
and services being advertised, different social media platforms
can be used. Generally, the different platforms allow companies
to provide detailed information about the products and services
that they are selling.

Social media have many users. For example, facebook alone has
1.74 billion active users across the world. This implies that
advertising products and services through social media exposes
the company to hundreds of millions of potential customers.
This eventually increases the demand for goods and services.

a company will reach millions of potential customers
Advertising on social media is cheap and effective. A company
does not need to pay to advertise its products. It only makes a
one-time payment to get followers or the audience. Thereafter,
advertisements are made free of charge and they can potentially
reach millions of users.

Policies Involving Social Media
A social media policy is a guideline determining how employees
should use social media
For instance, they must always be professional when working on
behalf of the company
Users need to respect each other privacy
They should also use the right tone of words while posting
It is important to regulate how social media is used especially
in the workplace. It has to be used within particular rules and
regulations. For instance, employees must always use
acceptable words that portray a professional nature. This
ensures that they are on the right side of the law.

The social media policy determines what employees should post
or what they should not (Al-Deen & Hendricks, 2012). This is
because whatever is posted on social media has an impact
whether positive or negative. The policy ensures that the

Employees must be professional while using social media
They should use acceptable words and expressions
It is always important to stick to the point
This ensures the information is relevant
Professional communication maintains a professional
relationship
Communication through social media must always be
professional. The employees must make sure they observe the
social media policy while communicating. Whatever words or
expressions that they choose to use must be professionally
acceptable (Burgess & Burgess, 2013).

be effective. In simple terms, it should focus on the major point.

being passed.

To a large extent, the kind of communication that a company
does with its stakeholders determines the relationship that will
exist between them. For this reason, it is important for all rules
and regulations of professional communication to be observed.

social media, a company will enjoy many benefits including
creating brand awareness as well as attracting and retaining
more customers. On the other hand, improper usage of social
media can make a company to land on the wrong side of the
law.

Brand Awareness Each company wants its brand to be known Social media make this possible through digital marketing It exposes the company to a huge audience Social media are important for companies because they enable them to achieve brand awareness (Al-Deen & Hendricks, 2012).

It has to be used within particular rules and regulations. For instance, employees must always use acceptable words that portray a professional nature.
