Before the course, the author had little exposure to ELLs and migrant farm workers. Through readings like "...And the Earth Did Not Devour Him" and class discussions, the author gained a deeper understanding of the challenges ELLs and migrant communities face. This challenged some of the author's initial views. The author also learned about linguistic concepts like phonology and syntax through analyzing cartoon characters.
