This document provides notes on simple machines that are not included in the textbook. It defines a simple machine as a device that makes work easier using minimal moving parts, often through human power. Examples given are inclined planes and pulleys. Simple machines allow a smaller force to be applied over a greater distance to do the same amount of work. They multiply the input force but do not reduce the total work. Mechanical advantage is the ratio of output to input force, while efficiency accounts for real-world friction. Formulas are provided for calculating work input and output, as well as mechanical advantage and efficiency of inclined planes and pulleys. A sample problem is worked through as an example.
