Serials Solutions: overlap analysis

Overlap analysis identifies the number of journals that are unique to individual databases within a library's collection as well as the number of journals that have overlapping coverage between databases, allowing a library to check for duplicate titles and evaluate coverage between database providers. The process involves running an analysis through Serials Solutions to generate a report on the level of overlap between selected databases, which can then be exported to Excel for further analysis. What’s ‘overlap analysis’? n First launched as part of Serials Solutions in 2004 n It “shows, for each database in a library's collection, the number of journals in that database that are unique to that database, and the number that are available elsewhere in the library's collection” SerialsSolutions press release, 29 April 2004 th n So it identifies duplicate journals and titles which have identical coverage
Why would you want to do it? n A quick way of identifying titles which are available in more than one provider n Identify and remove duplicate entries n Check coverage is correct by comparing alternative providers (i.e. Wiley and SwetsWise) n Identifying oddities and errors n Simple process with minimal effort required

What do all these columns mean? n Title unique – the number of titles only available through that database and no other. n Title overlap – a journal which is available in more than one database. n Full holding overlap – the same content is available in more than one database n Partial holding overlap – some of the same content is available in more than one database n Holding unique – title available in more than one database but without overlapping coverage
