Be you stones or iron
Scientific Miracle
Is it possible for the bones of living beings
to turn into stones or iron after death?.
The answer is yes.
This is a confirmed scientific fact in
paleontology, discovered by
paleontologists.
When the soft tissues of a living organism buried under
sediment decompose, mineral-rich groundwater seeps
into the pores of the bones and gradually replaces
their organic components with solid mineral materials
through a process known as mineralization.
What is astonishing is the reference to this in the Holy
Quran, revealed 14 centuries ago. In the words of God
Almighty, in response to the polytheists who denied
resurrection after death.
God Almighty say:
"And they say, 'When we are bones and crumbled
dust, will we indeed be resurrected as a new
creation?'
Say, 'Be you stones or iron.'" Or a creation that is even
more difficult for you to comprehend.
Then they will say, “Who will bring us back?” Say, “He
Who created you the first time.” Then they will shake
their heads at you and say, “When will that be?” Say,
“Perhaps it is near.”
(Al-Isra: 49-51).
1- Commentators interpret the phrase “Say, ‘Be you
stones or iron’” as indicating that the rhetorical
meaning is a challenge and a demonstration of
God’s power to resurrect even if a person were to
transform into the hardest and most inert materials,
such as stones or iron.
There is no difficulty in resurrection, whether from
organic form (bones and remains) or inorganic form
(stones or iron).
Because He who created humankind and other
creatures in the first place from nothingness and from
the dust of the earth is capable of recreating them,
which is easier from the perspective of the polytheists,
for with God Almighty there is no easy or difficult thing.
Everything is easy for Him, as He, the Exalted, said:
“And it is He who originates creation, then repeats it,
and that is [even] easier for Him. And to Him belongs
the highest attribute in the heavens and the earth.
And He is the Exalted in Might, the Wise.” (Ar-Rum: 27).
2- While those interested in scientific miracles point to
the verse's correspondence with paleontology, where
the bones of buried organisms are transformed over
time in silica-rich environments into rocks, or, in the
presence of other minerals, into solid compounds
similar to iron.
The mechanism by which bones
transform into stone or iron,
according to scientists, is as
follows
1- Transformation into stone (silica or calcification):
This occurs when minerals such as silica or calcite are
deposited within the pores of the bones, making them
as hard as rock while retaining their precise shape.
2- Transformation into iron (pyrite):
This occurs when bones are buried in oxygen-free
environments rich in pyrite (ferrous disulfide), where the
bone material is completely replaced by iron,
retaining its luster and metallic properties.
There are many other signs that remind us of death
during our lives, regardless of the complete death of a
being with the soul leaving the body entirely, such as
the death of a human being and their burial in a
cemetery, as we all know.
As for resurrection after death, we see with our own
eyes how the living emerge from the dead.
For example, the eggs of fish, insects, and birds hatch
into living creatures that swim in the water, walk on the
land, and fly in the sky.
Plant seeds germinate in trees, and date pits sprout in
large palm trees if the soil is moistened and suitable for
germination.
The life cycle of the silkworm involves an alternation of
life and death.
In fact, at each stage, we find a different, transformed
creature. The worm pupates to become a nymph,
which then transforms into a white butterfly that
pierces the silken cocoon and emerges to lay a large
number of black eggs. These eggs then hatch into
new silkworms, and so on.
God Almighty and His Messenger (peace and
blessings be upon him) have informed us of the
resurrection after death in the verse:
“And He who sends down rain from the sky in due
measure, and We revive thereby a dead land. Thus will
you be brought forth.”
(Az-Zukhruf 43:11).
As for the authentic hadiths, they indicate that man is
created from the coccyx, which does not decay, and
from it, creation is reconstituted on the Day of
Resurrection.
The reconstitution of man on the Day of Resurrection
from the coccyx is similar to the reconstitution and
creation of plants from seeds in the earth, as
mentioned in the previous verse.
The seed from which man grows is the coccyx.
Despite all this, there are those, both in the past and
present, who do not believe in resurrection after
death. For example, the polytheists of old denied the
reality of resurrection after death, when a person turns
to bones and dust.
However, the divine response came to tell them that
even if they become (stones or iron), God is able to
resurrect them again.
It makes no difference to God whether they remain in
their organic form (bones and remains) or have been
transformed into an inorganic form (stones or iron).
He who created humankind and other creatures in
the first place from the dust of the earth is capable of
recreating them, a process that is even more
complete than the initial creation.
God responded to those who deny the Resurrection
with His words: “Say, ‘Be you stones or iron, or any
creation that you deem impossible.’” (Quran 6:125-
126).
This verse contains several indications of scientific
facts, including the following.
1- The possibility of mineralization of the remains of
living organisms:
The most well-preserved remains of living organisms
are the hard ones, such as bones, teeth, and armor.
With the circulation of groundwater, which carries
dissolved minerals, the chemical compounds in these
remains are replaced by various minerals, often
calcite, silica, or pyrite.
These fossilized remains can be divided, according to
the minerals that replaced them, into two main types:
remains that have turned into stones and remains that
have turned into iron.
2- The abundance of these minerals necessary for the
mineralization process in the Earth's crust:
It is known that the Earth's crust and atmosphere
contain 118 elements.
Based on their abundance, the minerals required for
the fossilization process, or the transformation of iron,
are the most abundant in the Earth's crust.
These are among the top five elements, which include,
in order: oxygen, silicon, aluminum, iron, and calcium.
Sodium, potassium, and magnesium follow, and so on.
These observations have been recently understood
through several sciences, including geology (the
science of the Earth) and paleontology (the study of
ancient life). Paleontology lies between biology (the
science of life) and geology (the science of the Earth).
There is also paleontology, a relatively new and
growing field that combines the methods and findings
of biology in the life sciences with the methods and
findings of terrestrial paleontology. It is sometimes
referred to as terrestrial biology. Researchers in this
field are known as paleontologists.
Scientists can determine the age of fossils by dating
the rock layers that contain them using a method
known as radiometric dating.
This method involves determining the age of rocks
based on the radioactive isotopes they contain.
Therefore, the only way to study prehistoric life is by
studying its preserved remains in the form of fossils.
It is incorrect for some people to describe dinosaur
fossils as dinosaur skeletons, since the organic
materials that make up bones cannot, in reality,
remain intact for millions of years.
What we see is a rock model of these bones.
Consequently, we only see the parts of dinosaur
remains that have turned to stone.
Dr. Hosni Hamdan, Professor of Earth Sciences, states in
the introduction to his methodology for teaching
paleontology: “The archive of life on Earth is rich with
a magnificent record of the various civilizations that
have existed throughout history, from the earliest
creatures to appear on Earth to the present day.”
Three main factors play a role in preserving the
remains of extinct organisms, ranging from
mechanical and biological decomposition to
chemical processes.
The preservation of fossils requires a set of conditions,
including:
1. The presence of hard parts such as bones, shells,
and woolly tissue.
2. Rapid burial with minimal movement of the
organisms from their death site, not a long distance.
This falls under the field of taphonomy, which
specializes in what happens to a dead organism from
the time of its death until its discovery.
3. Burial in soft sediments such as clay, silt, and sand.
4. Limited movement due to the activity of bacteria on
the remains of animals and plants after death, thus
preventing rapid decomposition.
5. A stable level of temperature and humidity.
6. The circulation of groundwater, which carries
dissolved minerals to stabilize the chemical
components.
But how do bones turn
into stone or iron?
The circulation of groundwater carries dissolved
minerals to stabilize the chemical components.
It is known that the most well-preserved remains of
living organisms are hard remains such as bones,
teeth, and armor.
This occurs when the chemical compounds in these
remains are replaced by minerals, most often calcite,
silica, or pyrite.
As previously mentioned, silicon, iron, and calcium are
among the most abundant minerals in the Earth's crust.
Therefore, these fossilized remains can be divided into
two main types based on the minerals that replaced
them:
1- Remains that turned into stone:
Calcite and silica are the primary components of most
rocks and stones. In fact, silica is the most abundant
mineral in the Earth's crust. When silica or calcite
replaces the remains of an organism, a rock-like
structure is formed, and these remains are indeed
transformed into stone.
2- Remains that turned into iron:
In many cases, the remains of an organism are
replaced by the mineral pyrite, also known as iron
pyrite.
This mineral is iron disulfide (FeS ), and it has a color
₂
and luster similar to gold, hence its name, fool's gold.
When the remains of an organism are replaced by this
mineral and are well-preserved, the resulting iron pyrite
exhibits a metallic sheen similar to gold.
However, pyrite is an unstable mineral.
When the remains are not well-preserved and are
exposed to moisture, they oxidize and transform into a
rust-like accumulation, which is iron sulfate
(FeSO4.7H2O).
To see the extent of the miracle, consider that the
remains of living organisms transform over the ages
into stones, or in some cases, into iron ore, which itself,
over time, turns into a pile of rust. And God Almighty
spoke the truth: “Say, ‘Be you stones or iron.’”
(Al-Isra: 50).
Say (O Muhammad SAW) "Be you
stones or iron,"
