Saint Stephen I was the first King of Hungary, reigning from 1000 until his death in 1038, and he is recognized for unifying the Carpathian basin and establishing Christianity in Hungary. He fought against pagan forces to secure the throne and was crowned with a papal crown, later founding several bishoprics and monasteries that fostered an independent church in Hungary. Stephen was canonized in 1083 and is celebrated as a popular saint, with his feast day marking Hungary's state foundation day.
