Introduction
Pedagogy isthe art & science of teaching
It is often associated with traditional classroom settings where
teachers are seen as the authority figure & students are expected to
passively receive information.
The focus is on imparting knowledge & skills through a structured
curriculum
That is designed to meet the needs of the learners.
In this approach, the teacher takes on the role of the expert who
imparts knowledge & the learners are seen as recipients.
9.
CONCEPT OF PEDAGOGY
The meaning of the word pedagogy is derived from the
Greek word Paidagogos
It literally means to lead the child.
In modern context Pedagogy used to refer to the
instruction, learning & the actual operation involved
It is not only related to the child instruction rather it
suggests Science of Teaching.
10.
CONCEPT OF PEDAGOGY
According to Oxford English Dictionary in 1571 Pedagogy is the term
that describes the relationships & interactions between teachers,
students & the learning environment & the learning tasks.
Pedagogy combines the teaching with culture, structure &
mechanisms within a social environment.
Pedagogy is not simply describing the activity of teaching
It reflects the production of broader social & cultural values within the
learning relationship.
11.
DEFINITION OF PEDAGOGY
Alexander (2004) - Pedagogy can be defined as the understanding of how learning takes place & the
philosophy and practice that supports that understanding of learning.
12.
MEANING OF PEDAGOGY
Pedagogyhas been described as the act & discourse of teaching according to Alexander, 2004.
It is concept related with child learning.
It is the study of teaching activity & it is convey in a manner that will lead to better learning in students.
It is the exploration of effective teaching & learning strategies
It involves being able to convey knowledge & skills in ways that students can understand, remember &
apply.
13.
Types of Pedagogy
It is based on the
concept for
development of social-
awareness & well-being
of the students.
The teaching must
consist of social
parameters.
It is versioned for the
society.
It is based on
critical
understanding
& thoughts or
beliefs on a
certain topic
It encourages
multiculturism
existing among
the students &
increases
awareness
about cultural
differences in
school.
It is based on
knowledge
from the other
sources along
with what it is
generally
available within
the institution.

Innovative Pedagogical Approaches(An approach is
broad in scope & serves as the foundational
framework for a method) :
The word innovative means using new methods (an overall plan for the orderly
presentation of material, which is based upon, the selected approach) that are advanced &
original;
Innovative pedagogical approaches involves usage of appropriate
means (tools) & methods (ways) in a new & creative ways & in varied
combinations
To make the teaching-learning process more effective
To enable the learners to attain the expected/defined learning
outcomes, develop students' capabilities in problem-solving, teamwork,
learning to learn, reflective thinking, to be creative, adapt to changes,
manage & analyze information & work with knowledge.
17.
There are fourbroad categories of pedagogical approaches
1.Behaviourism
2.Constructivism
3.Social Constructivism
4.Liberationist.
18.
(i) Behaviourism:
The theoryof behaviourism informs its approach toward
teacher-centred learning.
It advocates the use of direct instruction & lecture-
based lessons wherein the teacher is the sole authority
to lead the lesson & the knowledge being delivered in a
curriculum where each subject is taught discretely (Breaking a
big, complex thing into separate, individual, and distinct pieces so it's easier to understand)
(topic-based learning).
It is also referred as traditional teaching style
19.
(ii) Constructivism:
Learning throughexperiences & reflections is a part of constructivism
theory.
Constructivist pedagogy is 'invisible pedagogy' as it puts the child at the
centre of learning.
A constructivist approach would incorporate project work & inquiry-based
learning.
A lesson having constructivism theory includes individualization & leads to
slower-paced learning having hidden outcomes with the support of the
expert & less teacher talk.
This pedagogy also has scope for emphasis on being outdoors & engaging
with nature.
It is also sometimes referred to as a progressive teaching style
20.
(iii) Social Constructivism:
Socialconstructivism pedagogy could blend two priorities:
teacher-guided & student centred.
The teacher uses group work elements, having smaller group
sizes & limited topics for choices.
The teacher may also use teacher modelling, questioning & a
mixture of individual, pair & whole-class instruction.
21.
(iv) Liberationism:
A liberationistapproach involves democracy in the classroom as the
student's voice is placed at the centre.
The class discovers the subjects together & the teacher plays the role of a
learner.
Students playing the role of the teacher decide about the topic of the
lesson & showcase their learning through performance, speech, or dance.
The teacher thus provides space & opportunity for the students to learn
independently.
22.
The following innovativepedagogies may be considered:
Blended learning
Gamification
Computational thinking
Experiential learning
Multi-literacies (using movies, images, podcasts, infographics,
social media posts & real-life stories in the classroom)
23.
Significance of Pedagogy:
(i)Improves quality of teaching : It will benefit the students by
helping them thoroughly understand the learning material &
thereby improving the learning outcomes.
(ii) Encourage cooperative learning environment : It encourages
the learners to work together towards completing a task &
learn together.
(iii) Eliminates monotonous learning : It helps the learners to
analyzing , creative thinking & evaluation .
24.
Significance of Pedagogy:
(iv) Students can follow their ways of learning : It caters to the
learning abilities of different students.
(v) Convenient learning approach for all : Students with
different abilities needed different ways of learning.
(vi) Improves teacher-students communication: The teacher
understand the students in a better way & focus on the
students weaknesses & guide them accordingly.
25.
Significance of Pedagogy:
(vii) Pedagogy is essential in enabling students to learn more
effectively
(viii) Giving Consideration to the voice of the learner- Need of
the learner is foremost priority according to pedagogy.
(ix) Performance & Conduct of the teachers – Pedagogy helps
the teacher to provide best of his teaching.
(x) Knowledge & understanding of the teacher – Pedagogy
helps the teacher to know the learner first than the content
part.
26.
Need for DiversePedagogical Approaches
• Individual Differences: Every student learns at a different pace &
through unique modalities (visual, auditory, kinesthetic).
• Enhanced Engagement: Combining hands-on activities, digital tools,
& group tasks prevents monotony & deepens retention.
• Context and Content Matching: Abstract formulas may require direct
instruction, while conceptual or social topics thrive on inquiry & group
collaboration.
27.
Selection According toLearners and Content
• Learner Profile: Alignment with the students' developmental stage,
prior knowledge & psychological readiness.
• Subject Nature: Technical or factual subjects (like math rules) benefit
from behaviorist or structural methods, whereas creative or problem-
solving domains require open-ended or project-based strategies.
