Summary
Act 1 Scene 1
• A street fight breaks out between the Capulets and the
Montagues.
• The Prince stop the riot and threatens the death penalty
for anyone caught fighting in Verona’s streets again.
• Romeo’s parents asks Benvolio why Romeo has been
behaving strangely.
• Romeo tells Benvolio that he is in love with a girl who
refuses to be won over.
Act 1 Scene 2
• Paris asks Capulet for his permission to woo Juliet.
• Benvolio persuades Romeo to go to the Capulet’s feast,
where he can see girls who are more beautiful than the
one he loves.
Act 1 Scene 3
• Lady Capulet tells Juliet that Paris wants to marry her.
• Juliet considers Paris as a husband.
Act 1 Scene 4
• Romeo has had a dream which has made him uneasy
about attending the Capulet’s feast.
• Mercutio tells him about Queen Mab and declares that
dreams are only trivial fantasies.
• They enter the Capulet’s house, despite Romeo’s
concern.
Act 1 Scene 5
• Tybalt is bitterly angry that Romeo has gate-crashed the
Capulet’s feast, and says that he will not forget the insult.
• Romeo meets Juliet and they quickly begin to fall in love.
• After the lovers part, each is shocked to find out that they
have fallen in love with someone who is their enemy.
Act 2 Scene 1
• Leaving the Capulet’s feast, Romeo hides from Benvolio
and Mercutio.
• Mercutio speaks mockingly about Romeo’s love for
Rosaline and he and Benvolio leave.
Act 2 Scene 2
• Inside the Capulet’s garden, Romeo sees Juliet at her
window.
• Not realizing that Romeo is listening, Juliet speaks and he
answers her.
• Despite Juliet’s worry that it is all happening so quickly, they
declare their love for one another.
• Romeo promises to send Juliet a message the next morning
explaining when and where they can be married and they
part.
Act 2 Scene 3
• Romeo visits Friar Lawrence and tells him that he and
Juliet have fallen in love.
• The Friar finally agrees to marry the couple, believing that
their marriage will bring their two families together.
Act 2 Scene
• Mercutio, Benvolio and friends are in the beach.
• Romeo appears and enjoys some wordplay with Mercutio.
• The Nurse arrives looking for Romeo. He gives her
instructions about when and where Juliet is to meet him so
that they can be married.
Act 2 Scene 5
• When the Nurse returns to Juliet, she keeps putting off
giving Romeo’s message, complaining of tiredness.
• She finally tells Juliet when and where she is to meet
Romeo and be married.
Act 2 Scene 6
• The Friar advises Romeo about the nature of love.
• Juliet arrives and she and Romeo go off to be married.
Act 3 Scene 1
• Mercutio and Benvolio meet Tybalt, who is looking for
Romeo.
• Tybalt insults Romeo. When he does not respond, Mercutio
angrily challenges Tybalt himself.
• Mercutio and Tybalt fight. Mercutio is fatally wounded.
• Feeling ashamed that Mercutio died on his behalf, Romeo
fights with Tybalts and kills him.
• As punishment, the prince exiles Romeo from Verona.
Act 3 Scene 2
• Juliet is longing for night and Romeo’s arrival, when the
nurse enters, grieving at Tybalt’s death.
• When Juliet realizes that Romeo killed Tybalt, her feelings
are at first confused. Then it sinks in that Romeo is banished
and she becomes desperate.
• The nurse offers comfort, promising to bring Romeo to her
that night.
Act 3 Scene 3
• Romeo is desperate when he hears that he has been
vanished from Verona, and the Friar cannot comfort him.
• The Nurse arrives. Fearing that Juliet must now hate him and
imagining her grief, Romeo threatens to kill himself, but is
prevented by the Friar and the Nurse.
• The Friar instructs Romeo to leave for Mantua by dawn at
the latest, after he has spent the night with Juliet.
Act 3 Scene 4
• Capulet arranges with Paris that his wedding to Juliet will
take place in a few days time.
• He sends Lady Capulet to inform Juliet.

Act 3 Scene 5
• Having spent the night with Juliet, Romeo leaves for
Mantua.
• Lady Capulet tells Juliet that she is to marry Paris, but she
refuses.
• Capulet is furious with Juliet for her disobedience and
threatens her.
• The Nurse advises Juliet to marry Paris. Juliet pretends to
accept her advice, but privately planned to seek help from
the Friar.
Act 4 Scene 1
• Juliet arrives at the Friar’s cell. After a short conversation
with Paris, she asks the Friar for help.
• Seeing how desperate Juliet is, the Friar suggests a plan.
Juliet is to take a potion which will make it appear as though
she is dead. She will be laid in the Capulet’s tomb. The Friar
will write to Romeo who can then come and get her secretly.
She eagerly agrees.
Act 4 Scene 2
• Juliet returns home and tells her father that she has seen
the Friar and his now sorry for her disobedience.
• Capulet excitedly gives instructions that the wedding will
now take place the following day and goes to inform Paris.
Act 4 Scene 3
• Juliet prepares for bed and says goodnight to her mother and
the Nurse.
• Juliet overcomes her fears and drinks the potion.
Act 4 Scene 4
• Early next morning, the household is busy preparing for the
wedding. Paris has arrived to take Juliet to church.
Act 4 Scene 5
• When the Nurse goes to wake Juliet, she finds he
apparently dead.
• Paris and the Friar enter to find the Capulet’s grief-sticken
over Juliet’s death.
• The Capulet’s family go off to prepare for a funeral.
Act 5 Scene 1
• Balthasar brings news to Romeo in Mantua that Juliet is
dead.
• In desperation, Romeo vows to be with Juliet that night.
• He buys poison from an Apothecary and leaves for Verona.
Act 5 Scene 2
• Friar Lawrence is shocked to hear that Friar John has been
unable to deliver his letter to Romeo.
• He rushes off to get Juliet from the tomb, knowing that she
will soon be awake.
Act 5 Scene 3
• Romeo kills Paris when he tries to stop him entering the
tomb.
• To be with Juliet again, Romeo drinks the poison and dies.
• When the Friar arrives, Juliet wakes up. He tries to hustle
her away, but she is determined to stay by Romeo and the
Friar flees. Taking Romeo’s dagger, Juliet kills herself.
• The Prince, the Capulets and the Montagues find their
children and Paris dead.
• The Friar explains what has happened and the two fathers
make peace.
