So this graduate student, who is currently spending an inordinate amount of his PhD refactoring some old code, and needing to learn how to program, and then likely isn’t great so his work is buggy, can start from Day 1 having a research software engineer that has been maintaining the code for his lab, and can empower him to focus on the science.

  13. So what’s the problem? largely it’s that we don’t have a central, institutionally supported group. There are a ton of RSEs scattered around campus, but they sit in individual labs. Their positions are reliant on grant money,a nd when that dries up, so does their job security. It’s a bit of a dead end job - along with not having an intiial research software engineer title, you don’t have any plan for what it means to be level II, or to grow. And then talent goes straight into industry because of these factors.

  22. In research computing I’ve started up RSE Services, which is akin to research computing support, but not for HPC, for software. This is where you can go to request a little bit of help for maybe just writing a script, or a more long term request for help on a larger project. Only by way of having demonstrated interest from the community will we be able to grow this initiative and group.
