1.INTRODUCTION
The case study has been done for a mother and child welfare centre andital and the
design has to be done under the brief provided by the ethos group under their
competition named TRANSPARENCE 2017- Healing Spaces. The case study will help
us to analyse the hospital, which will enable us in contextualising the site for
creating the design and also help us in knowing different areas, equipments used,
user specified circulation, knowing basic hospital terms and proximity of different
areas which at last will lead to in helping us creating a mother and child hospital.
This is a secondary type of case study as the students didn’t went to the site of the
case study but researched it online with the aid of online available authentic sources.
The report has been done under the guidance of Prof. Nabanita Saha.

6.ESSAY ON HEALING SPACES
The art of healing oneself can be attained and practiced both internally and
externally. Individuals tend to portray different behavior to healing, which can be
triggered externally but ipso facto healing spaces. Healing spaces also tend to vary
based on the individual’s persona, for eg. For a philanthropist, library may be the
best place, but for a soldier, his home is the best place to be. According to the books,
a healing space is conceptually defined as, an environment that embodies living
structure allows us to live life fully. A building designed with sufficient attention
paid to the natural rhythms of human neurobiology resulting in conscious joy.
Although, psychologists have a different outlook, a healing space is defined as, a
place virtual or physical, where a human tends to ease on the stress level almost
involuntarily.
To explore the above mentioned definitions, psychologically, many humans tend to
meditate to try and focus on important matters, while easing on the stress meter.
Meditation can be done anywhere and anytime, thus it is not constrained to any
physical place. Architecturally, architects worldwide have been known, for creating
designs which engulf the living patterns of the human civilization into the core of
the building. Taking for example, the upcoming company offices in Singapore,
which proudly has placed a pseudo-forest around its periphery, creating a calm,
natural and pollution free zone for its employees
So to conclude, a healing space is a variable term, and it varies from person to
person.

7.CONCEPT
Our concept is the mother and the child at the earliest stage. The embryo develops
inside the mother’s womb and hence after some days the embryo gets attached the
uterus by the umbilical cord which the baby needs to get detached off after the birth.
But the baby never gets detached of the mother as he is always connected with her
emotionally. The strings remain always attached.
To symbolize the theme, we’ll design two buildings, a big building representing the
mother or the mother’s womb which will house mainly all the hospital
administration, maternity wards, the administration, this will be a multi storied
building. While the other building the small one which will be a 2-3 storied building,
hence representing the baby or the embryo which will mainy house the pediatric
department, the diagnostic centre (because the baby needs to be checked frequently
for a good health) and the other specialised departmnets, like ENT, dentistry etc. as
the mother needs to be checked frequently so that the mother’s other problems do
not hamper the baby’s growth.
Hence these two building will be connected by a skywalk reprenting the umbical
cord. It will only be present on 1-2 floorrs because it will be trying to symbolise that
the mother and baby is connected to the cord ,but the connection is not lifelong
only for a while hence only on some levels. As the the mother wishes her child to
leave her and live a successful life our concept tries to represent that.

  • 3. ARCHITECTURAL DEISGN-5 CASE STUDY 2 1.INTRODUCTION The case study has been done for a mother and child welfare centre andital and the design has to be done under the brief provided by the ethos group under their competition named TRANSPARENCE 2017- Healing Spaces. The case study will help us to analyse the hospital, which will enable us in contextualising the site for creating the design and also help us in knowing different areas, equipments used, user specified circulation, knowing basic hospital terms and proximity of different areas which at last will lead to in helping us creating a mother and child hospital. This is a secondary type of case study as the students didn’t went to the site of the case study but researched it online with the aid of online available authentic sources. The report has been done under the guidance of Prof. Nabanita Saha. 2.GENERAL ASPECTS Name- MID COAST HOSPITAL City- Bath, Burnswick, California Country- United States ARCHITECT- Gawron Turgeon No. of Beds- 93 Total Built up Area- 11065.15 sq. metres/ 2.734 acres Date of construction-2015 The hospital medical staff includes more than 200 providers. This includes outstanding private physician practices as well as a large multi-specialty physician practice that is part of the hospital, Mid Coast Medical Group. 3.LOCATION 3.1 SITE LOCATION Mid Coast Hospital is located in Brunswick, Maine, 25 miles north of Portland. Brunswick is the gateway to Maine's Midcoast region and sits on the northern rim of Casco Bay. Proximity to the ocean and mountains attract lovers of the outdoors to our area as well. The islands in Casco Bay are sometimes called the Calendar Islands.

Our 93-bed facility is an independent, not-for-profit hospital governed by a community Board of Directors 3.2.2 MICRO the building has been divided into three major blocks – the medical office block, the main hospital, the emergency. All the blocks are well connected. The main hospital and the emergency blocks are two storied, while the medical office block is three storied because it mainly houses all the administrative and financial department and the top floor been dedicated to specialize treatment 3.3 MAIN ACCESS The hospital has 5 major entries- 1. • 15. ARCHITECTURAL DEISGN-5 CASE STUDY 14 6.ESSAY ON HEALING SPACES The art of healing oneself can be attained and practiced both internally and externally. Individuals tend to portray different behavior to healing, which can be triggered externally but ipso facto healing spaces. Healing spaces also tend to vary based on the individual’s persona, for eg. For a philanthropist, library may be the best place, but for a soldier, his home is the best place to be. According to the books, a healing space is conceptually defined as, an environment that embodies living structure allows us to live life fully. A building designed with sufficient attention paid to the natural rhythms of human neurobiology resulting in conscious joy. Although, psychologists have a different outlook, a healing space is defined as, a place virtual or physical, where a human tends to ease on the stress level almost involuntarily. To explore the above mentioned definitions, psychologically, many humans tend to meditate to try and focus on important matters, while easing on the stress meter. Meditation can be done anywhere and anytime, thus it is not constrained to any physical place. Architecturally, architects worldwide have been known, for creating designs which engulf the living patterns of the human civilization into the core of the building. Taking for example, the upcoming company offices in Singapore, which proudly has placed a pseudo-forest around its periphery, creating a calm, natural and pollution free zone for its employees So to conclude, a healing space is a variable term, and it varies from person to person.
  • 16. ARCHITECTURAL DEISGN-5 CASE STUDY 15 7.CONCEPT Our concept is the mother and the child at the earliest stage. The embryo develops inside the mother’s womb and hence after some days the embryo gets attached the uterus by the umbilical cord which the baby needs to get detached off after the birth. But the baby never gets detached of the mother as he is always connected with her emotionally. The strings remain always attached. To symbolize the theme, we’ll design two buildings, a big building representing the mother or the mother’s womb which will house mainly all the hospital administration, maternity wards, the administration, this will be a multi storied building. While the other building the small one which will be a 2-3 storied building, hence representing the baby or the embryo which will mainy house the pediatric department, the diagnostic centre (because the baby needs to be checked frequently for a good health) and the other specialised departmnets, like ENT, dentistry etc. as the mother needs to be checked frequently so that the mother’s other problems do not hamper the baby’s growth. Hence these two building will be connected by a skywalk reprenting the umbical cord. It will only be present on 1-2 floorrs because it will be trying to symbolise that the mother and baby is connected to the cord ,but the connection is not lifelong only for a while hence only on some levels. As the the mother wishes her child to leave her and live a successful life our concept tries to represent that. UMBILICAL CORD THE BABY THE MOTHER’S WOMB
