Report on First International Summer School on Flow Cytometry, The University of Valencia, Valencia, Spain. 8-20 July, 2013. Organized by European Society for Clinical Cell Analysis. (ESCCA).
At the outset I express my deep sense of gratitude to Dr.Claude Lambert, Universite de Saint-Etienne, France. For taking the initiative to conduct this first International Summer School on Flow Cytometry at The University of Valencia, Valencia, Spain. I am also thankful for Prof.Jose-Enrique O’Connor who had sent me an invitation as Special Guest to the University of Valencia and allowed me to participate in the august summer school on flow cytometry. I express my very special thanks to Prof.Jose-Enrique O’Connor who has taken strong initiative to pursue my Visa Application processing with the Visa Officer at the Consulate General of Spain, Mumbai, India. Had he not taken such pressing steps it should not have been possible for me to attend this august workshop conducted by ESCCA. I have no words to express my wholehearted gratitude to Prof.Jose-Enrique for the magnanimous wavering of my registration fee.
The workshop started on Monday, 8th July, 2013 from 13:00hrs with registration of the participants, who had come from different parts of the world covering continents of Europe, Asia and North America. The First session of the workshop was covering the courses of 1).Basic Flow Cytometry and a parallel advanced course on 2).Functional Cytomics in Clinical and Translational Research. Both of these courses concluded on Saturday, 13th July, 2013. And subsequently there was a Second session of the workshop which started with a fresh batch of participants with registration to this new courses starting on Monday, 15th July, 2013. And the courses covering in this Second session of the workshop were 1).Clinical and Translational Applications of Cytometry and a parallel workshop on 2).Advanced Applications of Cytometry in Hematology. Both these courses were concluded on Saturday, 20th July, 2013. On a whole the overall participants for these courses were 43 candidates.

Abstract: T-cell receptor V beta (TCRVβ) gene repertoire (Vβ1-Vβ24) was evaluated in the peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) from asymptomatic and amicrofilaremic normal individuals (EN), and patients with chronic pathology (CP) harbouring Wuchereria bancrofti. TCRVβ gene expression in phytohemagglutinin (PHA) stimulated PBMC cultures from EN and CP individuals was in the order EN > CP while in Brugia malayi adult antigen (BmA) or purified protein derivative from mycobacterium tuberculosis (PPD) stimulation or the unstimulated conditions, the order was CP > EN. Thus, the PBMCs of the CP patients showed elevated levels of TCRVβ gene expression both in the unstimulated and stimulated conditions compared to EN.

The letter thanks Dr. Magapu Soloman Sudhakar for participating as a poster author at the Bangalore INDIA BIO 2010 conference from June 2nd to 4th. The poster was displayed in the "Walkway of Discovery" and was appreciated by visitors. The letter expresses gratitude on behalf of the Government of Karnataka and conference organizers, and looks forward to the doctor's participation in future years.
The document is a letter from the Research Advisory Board of Rajalakshmi Engineering College congratulating Dr. M. Solomon Sudhakar, an Associate Professor in the Department of Biotechnology, for securing a full travel and visa grant from the Department of Science and Technology of the Government of India to attend the Autumn Immunology Conference held in the United States on November 19-20, 2010. The letter is signed by the Chairman, Secretary, and members of the Research Advisory Board.
Dr. Solomon presented a talk and poster at the 39th Annual Autumn Immunology Conference in Chicago on his work studying the role of pro-inflammatory cytokines and vascular endothelial growth factors in lymphangiogenesis in filarial and cancer patients. The chair, Dr. Poojary, observed that Dr. Solomon's talk effectively explained the conceptual understanding of his work. Dr. Poojary suggested that expanding the study to include a larger number of subjects, around 100 patients, and obtaining more funding could lead to publishing the work in a higher impact journal and identifying potential drug targets for lymphedema. Dr. Poojary wished Dr. Solomon the best in continuing and advancing this promising research.
