RANGE DEVELOPMENT PROCESS PRODUCT CATEGORY:  MENS WEAR, KIDS WEAR, SWIM WEAR, MATERNITY WEAR, TARGET MARKET SEGMENT:  DEFINE THE SEGMENT PRICE RANGE:  DECIDE ON PRICE RANGE THEME:  SELECT AN APPROPRIATE THEME SEASON:   FOR WHICH SEASON

2.  THE MARKET THEY ARE DESIGNED FOR:  MARKET PREFERENCES SHOULD BE TAKEN INTO CONSIDERATION 3.  A SUFFICIENT VARIETY OF CHOICE: THE COLOUR GROUPS SHOULD BE  VARIED ENOUGH TO OFFER THE BUYER A RANGE OF APPROPRIATE AND ATTRACTIVE COLOURS. USUALLY THE DESIGNER CHOOSES 8-12 COLOURS FOR THE MASTER COLOUR STORY. THE ACTUAL COLOUR SELECTION WOULD DEPEND ON THE INDIVIDUAL DESIGNER’S TASTE. THE DESIGNER WOULD REVIEW ALL COLOUR PREDICTIONS FOR COMING SEASON AND CHOOSE COLOURS THAT ARE APPROPRIATE.
OCCASIONALLY A DESIGNER WILL IGNORE MARKET’S GENERAL TREND AND MAKE A VERY PERSONAL STATEMENT THROUGH THE USE OF UNUSUAL COLOURS. THIS PLAN GENERALLY SUCCEEDS ONLY IN BETTER PRICED LINE, WHERE STRONG DESIGNER IMAGE APPEALS TO FASHION CONSCIOUS CUSTOMER.  FABRIC BOARDS  THE DESIGNER WOULD ORGANISE ALL FABRICS CHOOSEN FOR A RANGE  ON A FABRIC BOARD AND RECORD ALL NECESSARY INFORMATION BESIDE EACH SWATCH. THIS WILL BE THE CENTRAL REFERENCE FOR FABRIC AND STYLING DECISIONS AS THE LINE DEVELOPS

SO THAT THEY ARE CONSTANTLY AWARE OF WHAT HAS BEEN PLANNED AND PURCHASED. FABRIC BOARDS FORM A VALUABLE RECORD OF HOW EACH SEASON WAS PLANNED AND WHAT COLOURS AND FABRICS WERE RUNAND THEY SHOULD BE KEPT AS REFERENCE. DESIGNER WORK BOARDS:  A DESIGNER CREATES MANY DESIGN SKETCHES BEFORE RANGE IS FINALISED. TO KEEP TRACK OF ALL THE STYLES THE DESIGNER SHOULD WORK UP A STYLE BOARDFOR EACH RANGE. THIS ALSO USED AS REFERENCE TOOL FOR FUTURE DEVELOPMENTS.
COSTING A GARMENT: THE DESIGNER SHOULD CAREFULLY FILL INFORMATION ABOUT FABRIC, TRIMS, AND SO ON. THEN THE SAME SHEET WILL BE REWORKED BY PRODUCTION DEPARTMENT  TO DETERMINE LABOUR COSTS, FABRIC CONSUMPTION ETC. THEN PRODUCTION PERSON WILL WORK WITH MANAGEMENT TO DEREMINE FINAL COST OF THE GARMENT.
