From Workshops to Walkshops @ OMUE Workshop, NoridCHI 2010Matthias Korn
Slides for Korn, Matthias & Zander, Pär-Ola (2010). From Workshops to Walkshops: Evaluating Mobile Location-based Applications in Realistic Settings. Workshop on Observing the Mobile User Experience at NordiCHI 2010, October 16-20, Reykjavik, Iceland, 29-32.
This document discusses embedded citizen participation using mobile devices. It presents two cases: a mobile app for municipal planning that allows location-aware feedback, and an augmented reality city tour app to inform citizens about development plans. Methodological challenges of studying mobile situated use in real-world contexts are also covered, such as experience sampling methods and walkshops. The overall goal is to facilitate citizen participation and discussion "on the spot" where issues arise, as well as allowing both in situ and remote engagement.
Human Computer Interaction at Aarhus UniversityMatthias Korn
This document summarizes Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) research at Aarhus University in Denmark. It outlines the faculty and researchers involved in HCI, the broad areas of research including participatory design and interaction design, and centers focused on interactive spaces and pervasive healthcare. It provides examples of projects in these areas and information on how to find more details about HCI at Aarhus University online.

From Hybrid Spaces to Experiencing Augmented PlacesMatthias Korn
Talk as part of the research seminars in media technology at Södertörn University, Huddinge, Sweden on January 27, 2012.
Abstract:
When mobile location-based systems interweave physical and digital spaces, augmented places emerge. I understand places as "the ways in which settings acquire recognizable and persistent social meaning in the course of interaction" (Dourish 2006: 299). Places can attain an augmented quality through the superposition of two modes of experience: physical and digital experiences. Technologies, I will argue, can help us to use this augmented quality for reflection and deliberation processes.
Based on case studies, I will explore how physical and digital spaces are brought into connection and how this connection is experienced by users: To which extent are augmented places viewed as integrated wholes? How does technology mediate interaction with augmented places?
In my presentation, I will address these questions drawing on examples from two participatory design cases in the domain of participatory urban planning and one study on the use of Foursquare, a location-based social networking service. The two participatory design cases explore questions of how 'being there' may facilitate reflection through the use of a mobile location-based discussion platform. The Foursquare study specifically investigates how the link between physical and digital is created and experienced by users.

Looking ahead – field trials in iterative and exploratory design of ubicomp s...Matthias Korn
We investigate in which forms field trials are a workable model as part of an exploratory design process for sporadic, mobile, non-work settings. A major concern of evaluating ubicomp systems is to study how practices and context of use emerge and develop over time when new technology is introduced. To introduce a sophisticated version of our own prototype in the course of an iterative design process, we conducted a public field trial of the system—a new platform for mobile democratic discussions in municipal planning—that we distributed via the Android Market. However, it turned out to be surprisingly difficult to evaluate our design in a setting that stretches over time, place, and without a preselected set of users. Analyzing our difficulties, we develop a general model for methods studying ubicomp systems. On the basis of this model, we characterize an openly interactive approach to field trials in order to look ahead rather than back.
This document is a birthday message for Shubhangi summarizing her journey from childhood to adulthood. It notes her growth from a Marathi girl to a woman who has found success at IIMB. While some things like her smile and love of eating have not changed, her hobbies and interests have evolved over time. The document wishes her a belated happy birthday and jokes that she will eat the entire cake herself.
This document provides information about an individual named Jessica Alba lover of IIMB, including their hobbies such as sketching dream girls and creating weird facial expressions as inspiration, as well as a call to visit their location K-217 to get a reaction from them.

Ph.D. Defence at the Department of Computer Science, Aarhus University on May 7, 2013.
Abstract:
Mobile phones and other situated technologies offer new possibilities to engage us citizens in urban planning activities while on the go, on our daily routes and routines. Matthias Korn has studied how to support people in participating in planning discussions while out and about and in close proximity to the sites of discussion. Experience from a number of software and hardware prototypes deployed in the field has led him to argue that mobile technologies afford a better integration of civic engagement activities into our everyday lives by offering opportunities to participate when such topics are most relevant and most present to us.
In doing so, Matthias Korn seeks to promote 'situated engagement', that is, to support civic engagement activities in those spatial contexts that are at stake in urban planning. Situated engagement complements existing forms of engagement such as polls, town hall meetings, or consensus conferences, because it connects discussions to the places of our daily life that are personally meaningful and relevant to us.
The PhD degree was completed at the Interdisciplinary Centre for Participatory Information Technology (PIT), Aarhus University.
