Princess Butterscotch: The Story of Princess Rose
Story By: Basak Serin
Princess Rose: Ruler of the Kingdom
The grand hall of Bluelight is dark and cold. Heavy
purple drapes block the light. Princess Rose sits high on
her throne, lazily admiring her polished claws.
Now, in this story, Princess Rose is the current leader
before Butterscotch is found. Princess Rose is unfair,
mean, and unstable. She is a white-and-gray cat with
green eyes. She wears dark blue or dark purple dresses.
She leads with zero empathy.
Chestnut is a light-brown and white tabby cat with long
fur and lime-green eyes. He wears an aqua green bow tie
and carries himself like a noble guardian of order. He is
the princess’s helper, trying hard to help the kingdom
under stress.
Weston is a small white and light orange tabby cat with
bright orange eyes. He wears a lime green bow tie. He is
younger than Chestnut. Weston is funny and curious,
always asking questions and making jokes, even in
serious moments. Together, they balance each other
perfectly as they try to keep the kingdom peaceful.
Chestnut and Weston stand at the foot of the throne,
holding a long list of grievances from the animals. They
look exhausted and highly tense. They needed to say
something to her.
Princess Rose (Yawning, dismissive): If this is another
complaint about the village food shortages or any other
problem I don’t care about, Chestnut, save your breath
and be quiet.
Chestnut (Stepping forward, voice tight with anger): Yes.
Your Highness, there is food storage in the kingdom, and
you keep dismissing the other issues going on. A true
ruler should be kind and patient, not starve her own
people!
Princess Rose (Narrowing her eyes, cold): A true ruler
dictates, Chestnut. I do not ask the animals what they
want. They give me what I want.
Weston (Whispering urgently to Chestnut): Careful,
Chestnut. Look at her guards. She has power that’s way
over her head! She doesn't care.
Princess Rose: What are you two whispering about? Are
my own advisors questioning my authority? Again?
Chestnut: We are questioning your fairness, Rose. The
kingdom is becoming unstable. If you continue to ignore
the neglected problems of Bluelight, the kingdom will
suffer.
Princess Rose (Standing up, her voice echoing sharply):
Let them try! I’m the leader! You two serve me, not
anyone else! If I hear one more word of dissent from
either of you, I will have the royal guards punish you
both!
Weston and Chestnut exchange a dark, knowing look. The
trust is completely shattered. They realize the kingdom
cannot survive under her.
Weston (Bowing stiffly, hiding his anger): As you
wish...Princess.
Princess Rose: Dismissed. Bring me my jewels.
Princess Rose turns her back on them. Chestnut and
Weston quietly step out of the throne room into the
shadows of the corridor.
Chestnut stops, looking back at the heavy throne room
doors with deep worry.
Chestnut (Quietly to Weston): She will destroy Bluelight
completely. We cannot guide a kingdom under a cat who
is so evil.
Weston agreed.
Chestnut: We need a leader who understands history,
fairness, and intelligence. Someone completely different.
Weston: But where would we ever find someone like that?
Chestnut: There may be an answer in the ancient royal
library. Long ago, the kingdom's founders created a
magical book portal. It was said to bring someone from
another place when the kingdom was in desperate need.
Weston: You mean that dusty old book nobody has read in
hundreds of years?
Chestnut: Exactly. But first, we must deal with Rose.
Story #1
Chestnut (Slamming a heavy book onto Princess Rose’s
table): Look at these numbers, Rose! You spent the entire
winter emergency fund on a golden statue of yourself!
The kingdom is bankrupt, the palace walls are crumbling,
and you don’t care!
Princess Rose (Admiring her new necklace): Gold suits
me much better than it suits someone like you, Chestnut.
Go bother someone else! Get out!
Chestnut got very mad.
Story #2
Chestnut (Voice trembling with fury): You think that
crown makes you untouchable, but a crown is nothing
without a kingdom to support it. Fear is a terrible
foundation for a throne, Rose. One day, your cruelty will
catch up to you, and when this kingdom collapses, you
will be left entirely alone in the dark.
Princess Rose (Giggling maliciously): Then it is a good
thing I am not afraid of the dark. I have plans of
becoming queen, conquering the entire kingdom in my
paws! (laughing manically).
Princess Rose (Angry): Guards, remove this annoying cat
from my sight!
Chestnut (Angry, crosses arms): You are not worthy of
being a leader!
Her guards were bobcats that looked strong and scary.
Chestnut was afraid, but confident.
Story #3
Princess Rose had an unfair disagreement with her royal
advisors, Chestnut and Weston.
Weston was upset, and he cried a little.
Chestnut (angry, but calm): She doesn't have a single
ounce of empathy in her heart, Weston. She smiles while
the kingdom hurts. Mark my words, she is not a princess;
she is an enemy. We must find a way to lock her away or
find a new ruler before there is nothing left of the
kingdom to save.
Weston: I hope so.
Weston hugged Chestnut.
Story #4
The central square of Bluelight was crowded with worried
animals. In the center stood the kingdom's ancient
fountain, a stone monument that provided fresh water to
much of the city.
A large crack had formed down its side.
Chestnut and Weston stood beside several frightened
workers as Princess Rose arrived wearing a dark crimson
rose dress.
Chestnut bowed.
Chestnut: Your Highness, the fountain is falling apart. If
we do not repair it soon, everyone could lose access to
clean water.
Princess Rose barely glanced at the fountain.
Princess Rose: And?
Weston blinked.
Weston: And...the animals need water.
Rose rolled her eyes.
Rose: They need discipline more than water.
A murmur spread through the crowd.
Chestnut stepped forward.
Chestnut: Are you kidding me?! The repairs will cost far
less than the decorations for next month's royal
celebration.
Princess Rose's eyes narrowed.
Rose: You mean the celebration honoring me?
Chestnut: Yes.
Rose smiled coldly.
Rose: Then the answer is obvious. The celebration
proceeds.
The workers stared in disbelief. Everyone was confused.
One elderly rabbit gathered enough courage to speak.
Rabbit: Princess, my family depends on this fountain.
Rose slowly turned toward him.
Rose: And yet here you are wasting my time.
The rabbit immediately lowered his head.
Weston looked horrified.
Weston: Rose, he was only asking for help.
Rose: Help?
Rose laughed.
Rose: Every day, someone wants something from me.
More food. More repairs. More money. More attention. It
never ends.
Chestnut and Weston were shocked.
Chestnut clenched his paws.
Chestnut: That is what rulers are for.
The crowd fell silent.
For a moment, Rose looked ready to explode with anger.
Instead, she smiled.
Rose: Then perhaps the crowd can repair the fountain
themselves.
She turned around and began walking away.
As she disappeared into the palace, a piece of stone broke
loose from the fountain and crashed onto the ground.
Water spilled into the street.
The animals watched their princess leave without even
looking back.
Weston: I didn't think she could get worse.
Chestnut stared at the damaged fountain.
Chestnut: Neither did I.
The grand hall of Bluelight is completely dark. Heavy
shadows hang over the empty throne.
Princess Rose struts into the room, and she is impatient.
She expects her usual servants, but the room is silent.
Princess Rose (Calling out sharply): Where is everyone?
Bring me my evening jewels at once!
No one moves. Rose takes another step forward, then
freezes.
Out of the shadows, two royal guards step forward. Both
are strong-looking bobcats with long spears. They look
determined. With a loud clang, they cross their spears
directly in front of Rose, blocking her path to the throne.
Princess Rose (shouting in anger): What is the meaning
of this? Move out of my way! I am the Princess!
Chestnut and Weston step out from behind the line of
guards. They look calm, but tired of her unfairness.
Chestnut steps directly up to Rose. He holds a massive
ring of iron keys.
Chestnut: Not anymore, Rose. The guards are done
mistreating everyone for you. Your unfair laws are over.
Rose stares at the heavy keys shaking in front of her. A
sharp shock of fear flashes in her eyes. Her paws tremble
slightly. She realizes her own guards have turned against
her.
Quickly, her fear turns into burning fury. She glares at
Chestnut, sneering to hide how scared she truly is.
Princess Rose: You are all weak! You will regret this day!
Chestnut: The only thing we regret is letting you rule for
so long. Leave the kingdom! Now!
Rose glares at the guards, but none of them lowers their
spears. Realizing she has lost all her power, she lifts her
head proudly. She takes off her gold crown and hurls it
onto the cold stone floor.
Princess Rose (Angry): Keep your broken kingdom!
Rose turns around and walks away, disappearing into the
dark tunnels of the castle. The heavy iron doors slam shut
behind Rose. A deep, relieved silence fills the empty
throne room. The kingdom is poor and broken, but Rose
is gone.
With her crown gone and her power lost, Rose wandered
far from Bluelight. For the first time in her life, she lived
without servants, guards, or treasures. She spent her days
alone, bitterly remembering the kingdom she once ruled.
Weston (Looking at the discarded crown): It’s over. She is
gone. But Bluelight is left in ruins, Chestnut. What do we
do now?
Chestnut (Shaking his head, putting the keys away): I’m
not sure. We do not take the crown for ourselves, Weston.
We are advisors, not kings. This kingdom needs a
completely different kind of leader to fix this damage.
Weston: Where will we find someone like that?
Chestnut smiled.
Chestnut and Weston entered the dust-covered royal
library, lighting a few dim torches as they walked past
rows of ancient history books to gather around a giant,
sleeping mirror portal. Together, they placed their paws
on the stone frame into the ancient glyphs until the glass
began to ripple with a faint, warm blue glow.
Weston looked at the light and whispered anxiously about
whether it would work since the next cat to come through
the gateway would inherit a completely ruined kingdom.
Chestnut stared deep into the blue light and replied softly
that they must wish the mirror would bring them a true
hero.
The dark reign of Princess Rose ended with a silent
rebellion inside her own palace walls. The royal advisors,
Chestnut and Weston, were tired of her cruelty to the
villagers. They secretly convinced the castle guards to
turn against her by promising a fair kingdom in which
guards would no longer have to mistreat citizens. When
Rose entered the hall to demand her jewels, she found the
room dark.
Her guards stood in a solid wall, crossing their spears to
block her path. Chestnut held the heavy keys to the
kingdom right in Princess Rose's face. Rose felt a sharp
shock of anger and fear, followed quickly by burning fury.
Realizing she had lost all power, the arrogant cat sneered
at her advisors to hide her fear. She took off her gold
jewelry, threw her sharp crown onto the cold stone floor,
and walked away into the dark tunnels.
With the cruel princess gone, the empty throne room
became completely quiet. The kingdom was finally free
from her unfair laws, but the kingdom was left poor and
broken. Chestnut and Weston refused to take the crown
for themselves.
They knew the kingdom needed a completely different
kind of leader to fix the damage. Together, they locked the
throne room doors and went into the ancient royal room.
They gathered around the giant portal and activated its
magic. They knew the next cat to come through the
gateway would inherit a ruined kingdom, but they wished
the portal would bring them a true hero.
