Princess Butterscotch
Written by: Basak Serin
Butterscotch is an orange cat with dark brown eyes. Her
fur is of medium length. She wears a hot pink scarf with a
darker shade woven through it that she always keeps on.
In her present life, she is a history teacher who loves
learning and teaching about the past.
One day, while Butterscotch is studying old cat stories,
she discovers a hidden secret doorway inside the library
wall. Instead of leading through time, it opens into a
forgotten underground cat kingdom sealed away for
centuries. Before she can turn back, she slips through, and
the doorway disappears behind her.
Butterscotch becomes confused and scared as she realizes
she is trapped in a lost world far beneath her own. The
bright pink of her scarf stands out against the stone
tunnels and ancient cat carvings all around her. She
quickly realizes that the entrance is gone and that she
cannot simply return home.
Now stuck in the hidden kingdom, Butterscotch tries to
find help from the cats who live there. Even though she is
frightened, she uses everything she knows about history
to understand their world and search for a way back
home.
In the cat village of Bluelight, there is no electricity or
modern supplies. It’s very dark at night. The atmosphere
is calm but not very colorful.
Chestnut is a light-brown and white tabby cat with long
fur and lime-green eyes. He wears an aqua green bow tie
and carries himself like a noble guardian of order. Once a
former princess’s helper, he now ensures the village runs
smoothly, organizing daily life and solving problems with
a serious yet kind heart.
By his side is Weston, a small white and orange tabby cat
with bright amber eyes. He wears a lime green bow tie.
Weston is funny and curious, always asking questions and
making jokes, even in serious moments. Together, they
balance each other perfectly as they try to keep the village
peaceful.
Chestnut and Weston are also on an important mission in
the village. They are searching for a new princess,
someone kind, fair, and good-hearted who can lead the
cats properly. The old princess was cruel and disliked by
nearly everyone, and her rule left the village in confusion.
Now they hope to find someone better who can bring
peace and balance back to their world.
Butterscotch walks through the village in the early
morning light, where everything feels ancient and still.
The stone paths are cold, and the cats around her move
with strict, formal manners. She tries to act normal and
calm, but her relaxed gait and bright pink scarf make
other cats give her strange looks.
Fortunately, Butterscotch remembers something
important. Before she arrived, she had read old records
about the kingdom’s traditions. She quickly adjusts her
behavior, copying the proper greetings and posture she
studied, trying her best not to stand out too much. The
villagers still stare, but she manages to avoid drawing too
much attention.
Later, when she is alone near a quiet stone archway, the
reality of everything hits her again. She understands fully
that she cannot go back home. The doorway is gone, and
there is no clear path back to the surface she came from.
She sits down, trying to stay quiet, but she begins to cry
softly to herself, overwhelmed and scared. Even so, she
wipes her tears and tells herself she will find a way out
someday.
From a distance, Chestnut is walking into the village
square and notices her sitting alone. He pauses, watching
her carefully as he studies her behavior. He can see she is
not causing trouble; she is only struggling to understand
where she is. He decides not to approach right away.
Instead, he waits quietly until she notices him first,
maintaining a calm, steady presence while giving her
space.
She sees Chestnut and asks for assistance.
Butterscotch: Can you help me? I’m from the modern
world—no, I mean I don’t know where to go or where I
am. I feel like I don’t belong.
Chestnut: I believe that you are lost, but not careless.
What happened to you? What’s your name?
Butterscotch: It’s Butterscotch. I’m a history teacher. I
was studying at the library. I came through a doorway that
disappeared. Now I can’t find my way back to my
timeline, and I don’t know what to do.
Chestnut: I’m Chestnut. That’s surprising. A
disappearing doorway is not something the village openly
speaks of. You must be very careful about who knows
your secret, future girl!
She gasped.
Butterscotch: So, is there a way back home?
Chestnut: I’m not sure. But survival here is possible if
you learn the kingdom.
Butterscotch: I don’t even know what this place really is
yet. Everyone keeps looking at me as if I don’t belong.
Chestnut: That is because you don’t belong here. But that
is not always a bad thing.
Butterscotch: What do you mean?
Chestnut: This kingdom has been without balance for a
long time. The old princess made it that way.
Butterscotch: Old princess?
Chestnut: She ruled unfairly. She ignored the village cats
and made decisions only for herself. She did not listen,
not even when the kingdom was falling apart.
Butterscotch: That sounds like it hurt a lot of animals
here.
Chestnut: It did. That is why everything feels so strict
now. The village is trying to recover, but trust was broken.
Butterscotch: So, what happens now?
Chestnut: Now we look for someone better. Someone
kind enough to lead, and patient enough to fix what she
damaged.
He smiled at her.
Butterscotch: I still don’t understand how I fit into any of
this.
Chestnut: (smiles softly) You don’t need to understand
everything at once. Just know that I will keep your secret
safe. The village does not need to know where you came
from. Your secret will shock everyone in the kingdom and
cause chaos! You must adjust until you go back to your
timeline, okay?
She nodded.
After talking to Butterscotch for some time, Chestnut had
been thinking about it for a long time, but at that moment,
he made a quiet decision. He realizes that helping
Butterscotch find her way home may not be what the
kingdom truly needs. He sees her kindness, her patience,
and the way she listens, and he begins to believe she
could become the new princess they have been searching
for.
Without warning, Chestnut asks her immediately to come
with him to where he and Weston work and the former
princess’s castle. He tells her she does not need to decide
anything about the future yet, but she should see the place
where the kingdom is guided and cared for. Butterscotch
is surprised and unsure, but something in Chestnut’s
serious yet gentle tone makes her agree.
When they arrive, she meets Weston. Weston immediately
greets her with curiosity and humor, acting excited and
slightly chaotic, as if he has been waiting for something
interesting to happen for a long time. Butterscotch
realizes this is a place full of responsibility and the
beginning of something she does not yet fully
understand.
Butterscotch explores the princess’s home. The place is
gray and old. Chestnut, Weston, and the current Princess
have their own bedrooms, closets, and more.
Butterscotch: This place is bigger than I expected. I wish
there were a splash of color, like pink and purple.
Weston: Yeah. You mean rose and violet colors, right?
Butterscotch: Yes.
Weston: I agree. Are you and Chestnut friends?
Butterscotch smiles and giggles.
Weston: Of course, we are! He is sometimes too much.
But he means well. He cares a lot.
Chestnut is serious, waiting to speak with Weston.
Chestnut: Weston, may I speak with you for a moment?
Weston hesitated.
Weston: Okay?
Butterscotch walks slowly around the room, looking at
old maps and carved stone tables. She sighs, wondering if
she’ll be able to go back home to the modern world.
Weston: (whispering). Okay, what’s going on? She still
looks like she’s halfway out the door.
Chestnut: She is. But she is also exactly what the
kingdom has been missing.
Weston: You mean the princess idea again?
Chestnut: Yes.
Weston: That’s a big thought. But also makes sense. She
is really kind.
Chestnut: And she listens. She is so unique and smart!
She is also beautiful and fair.
Weston agrees and glares at her.
Weston: She also looks like she still misses her home.
Chestnut: That is why we do not rush her. We guide her.
Weston: And if she doesn’t want that?
Chestnut: Then we respect that. But I think she will
understand in time.
His smile faded away.
Weston: You really believe in her, don’t you?
Chestnut: Why wouldn’t I?
Weston: Okay, then I’ll help too. If she becomes a
princess, I’ll support her!
Later, the trio talks about technology. The walls are cold,
and the air smells of old dust and damp stone. The large
room looks like a communal workspace, filled with heavy
wooden tubs and rough stones.
Butterscotch: It’s so quiet here. Back home, I could wash
my clothes in the washer and dryer, use my computer, or
listen to music on my cellphone.
Weston: (Scratches his head) What are you talking about?
A washer? Does it have paws? And why would you dry
clothes in a 'dryer' when you can wait three days for the
cave dampness to dry them?
Butterscotch: No, Weston. They are giant machines that
spin like whirlwinds! And my cellphone is a tiny piece of
glass that I can use to search for information, listen to
music, and more!
Weston: Butterscotch, what’s a computer? Is it like a
magic box with homework inside?
Butterscotch: Not exactly, Weston. A computer is a
machine that people use to obtain information and stores
information so it can be used again later.
Weston: I see. Your timeline is interesting.
Weston really wants to visit her timeline someday.
Butterscotch: Back home, electricity powered nearly
everything, such as lights, machines, and even my
cellphone.
Chestnut: Electricity? What sort of force is that?
Butterscotch: It is a kind of energy. It travels through
wires, giving people light when the world grows dark.
Chestnut: Light without candles or firewood?
Butterscotch: Yes. Entire cities can shine through the
night because of it, and people use it to power tools,
music, and great thinking machines called computers.
Chestnut: That’s really useful.
After hearing about electricity and the modern world, the
room goes quiet for a moment. The idea of Butterscotch’s
world feels almost impossible for Chestnut and Weston,
but also inspiring.
Later, the three decided to color the palace pink. Chestnut
and Weston began by collecting natural materials from the
village gardens and nearby fields, choosing rose petals,
beetroot, and wild berries to create pink pigments. They
used cloth bundles, reed brushes, and moss pads to spread
and blend the paint onto the stone walls.
They crushed pigments on flat stone slabs and mixed
them with chalk and water until the paste became smooth
shades of rose pink for painting the castle walls. As they
worked, Butterscotch explained how paint in her world
was factory-made with refined pigments and chemical
binders stored in sealed cans, allowing huge walls to be
painted quickly with rollers and brushes.
Chestnut carefully adjusted the mixture so it would cling
to the damp stone without running, while Weston blended
lighter and darker pink tones to create soft variations
across the walls, slowly transforming the cold gray castle
into warm layers of pink. They also furnish the home.
Finally, the work was done.
Chestnut quietly leads Butterscotch down a calmer
corridor away from the painted hallway while Weston
follows close behind, still excited from the work they had
done. Chestnut offers Butterscotch the old princess's
room.
Chestnut explains gently that she can stay there for now
as a safe place to rest while she decides what to do next.
Butterscotch looks around the quiet room, tired but
relieved, and realizes she finally has somewhere to sleep
in this strange new world.
It’s morning and the cats wake up.
Chestnut and Weston wake Butterscotch up to start the
day.
Chestnut: Good morning, Butterscotch!
Butterscotch wakes up and greets them.
Weston: What would you like for breakfast?
Butterscotch: Pancakes!
Chestnut paused.
Chestnut: Pancakes?
Weston: What’s that supposed to be?
Butterscotch: (signs) Never mind.
Chestnut: We have bread and fruit. Come on, let’s have
breakfast!
The three have breakfast and start the day.
After breakfast, Butterscotch decides to sit outside and
look at the sky. Later, Weston, the cat, joins.
Butterscotch: I wish I could take a picture of this with
my camera.
Weston: What’s a camera?
Butterscotch didn’t answer.
Weston goes back inside and spots Chestnut.
Weston: What are you doing?
Chestnut: I’m making Butterscotch a princess dress! I
want to help her feel more comfortable during these
times.
Weston: I see. That’s very thoughtful of you.
Chestnut is making Butterscotch a bright pink princess
dress. The dress is dark and light pink. He also made her a
dark pink princess hat. As soon as he was done, he called
Butterscotch to show her.
Weston: Look what Chestnut made you!
Butterscotch is shocked. She thanked him.
Chestnut: I knew you’d like it!
Butterscotch puts on the dress for a while. She likes the
dress.
Later, Weston and Chestnut have a conversation with each
other. They both sit down at the table.
Weston: You are a good friend!
Chestnut: Thanks.
Weston: So, what do you think? Do you believe
Butterscotch will go back home to her timeline?
Chestnut: I don’t think so. But until then, let’s help her
navigate the current system.
Weston sighs.
Weston: I guess so…
Soon after, Butterscotch sits near a lake in the kingdom.
She wonders whether she will return home to her
timeline. She is upset.
Chestnut and Weston appear.
Chestnut: Butterscotch, may we speak?
Weston smiled and sat right next to her. She nodded.
Butterscotch: I feel upset that I cannot go back to my
timeline.
Chestnut: I’m sorry. But I’m afraid there is no solution to
going back home. You came from a portal from your
world into our world…now you are here…forever. I’m
afraid you are stuck in our era for a long time. You might
as well adjust to this world. Somehow it happened. Don’t
worry, Butterscotch, maybe there is still a way to go back
home, to your timeline.
Butterscotch smiled. The three cats hugged each other.
In the 15th-century cat kingdom of Bluelight, the misty
rooftops glowed faintly under a pale sky that never fully
became day or night.
A royal courier cat named Sir Leopold arrived at the
countryside home where the old princess once stayed.
Around his neck was a sealed scroll marked with the crest
of Bluelight.
He is an elder cat. He is a gray and white cat with brown
eyes. He is smart and serious. Leopold wears a dark blue
bow tie.
He gave them a letter. Inside, the message was urgent, but
Butterscotch did not fully understand it. It mentioned a
name she had never heard before, as if it carried
importance for the kingdom. To her, it only added more
confusion.
Weston and Chestnut immediately reacted when they
heard it. Their ears flattened, and they looked worried, but
they did not explain the name yet. Instead, they focused
on the message's urgency.
The kingdom of Bluelight was unstable after the old
princess ruled it. The Council of Whiskers believed a
temporary princess, who is kind and fair, was needed
urgently to guide the kingdom before things collapsed
into confusion.
Chestnut stepped forward first, tail flicking anxiously, and
begged Butterscotch to accept the role. Weston quickly
joined in, pressing close and meowing softly, urging her
not to refuse.
Sir Leopold stood quietly, waiting for her response, as if
the message itself depended on it.
Butterscotch looked down at the scroll again, still
confused about the unfamiliar name and why it mattered.
Weston and Chestnut kept insisting that the important part
was not the letter's name. It was the kingdom and the fact
that it needed a princess right now.
Butterscotch hesitated.
Butterscotch: But I’m not from this timeline. I want to
find my way home. I don’t know…
Chestnut: Please. Just until things are stable again and
until you go back home to your future timeline.
Weston stares at Butterscotch sadly.
Butterscotch thinks for a while.
Outside, the mist thickened over the rooftops of the
kingdom, as if waiting for her answer.
Butterscotch thought about it, looking from Weston to
Chestnut and then to Sir Leopold, before giving a small,
determined nod.
Butterscotch: I’ll be the princess of the kingdom that
everyone needs.
Sir Leopold immediately lowered his head in formal
respect, his tail stilling as if the message had finally been
fulfilled. Weston was relieved and stepped forward as if
he could not believe she had agreed, while Chestnut
cheered. Butterscotch, Chestnut, and Weston all hugged
each other.
