Supercomputers were first introduced in the 1960s and are used for specialized applications requiring large amounts of mathematical calculation. Examples include IBM Sierra, Sunway, NUDT, and Cray Titan. Supercomputers are used for weather prediction, weapons design, atomic research, government calculations, and movie/animation effects. They have advantages like decreasing processing time and improving safety but also disadvantages like high costs, maintenance requirements, and limited storage/bandwidth.
