Automated Driver Surge Communication (MVP)

Overview
The following PRD documented the requirements for the “Automated Driver Surge Communication” project.
This feature was inside our backlog ever since we implemented the Snapp’s Surge Pricing system, and it
remained there for over a year due to its unclear business gains while requiring a considerable development
effort from multiple squads. After doing an A/B test and getting a sense of the possible business impact, I
defined a very minimum – yet viable – version of this product which was much smaller in scope. The following
document was prepared to ensure proper alignment among all stakeholders (including the commercial team
as well as multiple product squads) before breaking down the project into stories. This way, I managed to
prioritize this item and give it a shot in the real world without risking considerable resources.
Technical Background
• The goal of a surge pricing system is to dynamically adjust the price of a product or service based on
changes in supply and demand. Surge pricing is commonly used in industries such as ride-hailing, food
delivery, and event ticketing, where demand can fluctuate rapidly and unpredictably. By increasing prices
during periods of high demand, surge pricing aims to incentivize more providers to enter the market and
supply the product or service, while also encouraging some customers to wait until demand has decreased
before making a purchase. This can help to balance supply and demand, improve efficiency, and ensure
that customers who are willing to pay more for a service can receive it, even during peak periods.
• Communicating surge with the users was nothing new. Most marketplaces – ride-hailing in particular –
notify their users about the changes in the price. UBER notifies its drivers about surged areas by showing
them a live heatmap inside the app to communicate the surge multipliers in the nearby regions, so they
can navigate smartly rather than intuitively.
• Snapp's surge pricing system, known as "KANDOO," is inspired by UBER’s Hexagonal Geospatial Indexing
(a.k.a. “H3”). This approach creates a more efficient and responsive marketplace by dividing the Earth's
surface into hexagonal grids, providing a uniform and granular unit of space to calculate surge factors.

been masked. This includes but is not limited to: names, key numbers, and technical details and references.
Any sensitive information that may potentially compromise the security of the company has been eliminated
to ensure its protection.

UBER notifies its drivers about surged areas by showing them a live heatmap inside the app to communicate the surge multipliers in the nearby regions, so they can navigate smartly rather than intuitively. • Snapp's surge pricing system, known as "KANDOO," is inspired by UBER’s Hexagonal Geospatial Indexing (a.k.a. “H3”). This approach creates a more efficient and responsive marketplace by dividing the Earth's surface into hexagonal grids, providing a uniform and granular unit of space to calculate surge factors.
