DRONES IN AGRICULTURE The Power of Local
Drones in Agriculture Implementing drones for agriculture presents a new opportunity in data collection for agriculture due to the unique nature of crops and the dynamics of crop production.Contrary to the operations of regular survey drones, the drones for agriculture use multispectral sensors to detect the field variability in crop production by measuring the variable reflectance values along the Near Infrared and Red bands of the electro magnetic spectrum. The Power of Local Drones collect raw data and translate it with algorithms into useful information. Therefore, they can be used for various applications in farming, such as the monitoring of the following parameters; 1. Crop health-damage caused by pests, color change due to pest infection. 2. Vegetation indices- leaf area, anomaly detection, treatment efficacy, phenology, yield 3. Crop Spraying 4. Plant scouting- plant size, plot statistics, stand number, compromised plots, planter skips 5. Water needs- water-stressed parts of the field/orchard in need of watering 6. Soil analysis-nutrient availability for plant nutrient management Role of Drone Technology in Agriculture
The Power of Local Vegetation absorbs and reflects solar radiation in different bands. The percentage of refracted radiation in specific bands, such as near infrared (NIR), red (RED), and short-wave infrared (SWIR), varies with plant health and water stress . The most used vegetation index is the NDVI (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index) which describes the vigour level of a crop.NDVI is highly informative, as it allows the immediate recognition of the areas of the farm or field that have problems.

Flying Labs Nigeria Southwest Hub as adopted the approach of setting up a smart farming advisory and technical center as a means of building capacity of youth in smart farming, localization of drone technology especially in small holder agriculture and farm optimization.
The Power of Local Approach to Implementation Flying Labs Nigeria Southwest unbundles the concept of agriculture into manageable parts to understand the need for drones in agriculture.

Localization In localizing the application of drones in agriculture ,youth are trained on mapping, drone piloting and data interpretation. This essential to build the skill set of local youth in digital agropreneurship, while creating job opportunities for the youth as e-extension personnel. Secondly ,Flying Labs Nigeria Southwest Hub, works closely with farmer cooperatives and association to ensure that there is uptake of the drone technology for the farmers.
CASE STUDY The Power of Local
The Power of Local Case Study-Cotton Farmers Flying Labs Nigeria Southwest Hub has partnered with Agroxchange Technology Service to provide crop monitoring, farmer profiling, capacity building and drone crop spraying services to the Kogi State chapter of the National Association of Cotton farmers(NACOTAN). The key objective of the engagement is to create a structured geospatial database of cotton farmers, apply drone technology and remote sensing to monitor the health of the captured cotton farms in order to achieve optimal yields, ensure compliance with Good Agronomy Practices and increase the capacity of the cotton farmers to pay back loans and meet market standards. The Power of Local Flying Labs Nigeria Southwest Hub as implemented ESRI survey 123 and ArcGIS online to implement a continuous data collection and update mechanism whereby trained local youth collect the data on cotton farmers and send the data in real time and offline modes to a central database. The ArcGIS online provides an interactive method of presenting and viewing the data collected by NACOTAN management. This approach provides an opportunity to integrate mapping and drone technology with both the cotton farmers and NACOTAN workflow. The farmer boundary measurements allow for precise setting of flight plan over a farm during the drone application stage.
