  What Happens inCancer Cells? ■ Cancer cells loose the normal control of cell division. ■ They continue to grow and multiply even when the body does not need new cells. ■ They do not respond properly to signals that tell them to stop dividing. ■ They avoid programmed cell death (apoptosis), allowing damaged cells to survive. ■ They can form a mass of tissue called a tumor. ■ Some cancer cells spread to other parts of the body through the blood or lymphatic system, a process called metastasis.
