OPT and OPT jobs in USA
All the information you will ever need
What is OPT?
International students with F-1 visa status who are enrolled in or have finished a
degree program in USA are eligible for OPT (Optional Practical Training), a
benefit. Uses for this employment include:
 before completing a course of study
 during a time of annual leave
 after finishing your education
The date on which you actually fulfil all prerequisites for a program of study is
referred to as your "completion of studies" (such as the date of your final exams,
or submission of your thesis or dissertation). It is not always assumed that this is
the day of graduation celebrations.
ELIGIBILITY
F-1 students may petition to U.S. Citizenship & Immigration Services (USCIS) for
up to 12 months of OPT work authorization if they have maintained valid F-1
student status for at least nine months. You must meet the following
requirements in order to be eligible to apply for OPT:
 Maintain a valid F-1 status at the time of application;
 Be in full-time enrollment for at least one educational year by the demanded
start date of your OPT;
 Have never used OPT for the same degree level.
Components OF OPT
 Working toward pre-completion prior to graduation
 Working post-completion after graduating
 STEM OPT extension is offered to students majoring in science, technology,
engineering, or math who are hired by a company that is a participant in the
government's E-Verify Program.
What is Pre-Completion OPT?
 Optional Practical Training for "Pre-Completion" is utilized while you are still
enrolled in your degree program. The 12 months of OPT that are offered for
each degree level are reduced by the Pre-Completion OPT.
What is Post-completion OPT?
 Post-completion OPT stands for Optional Practical Training, which you use
AFTER completing your academic program. Keep in mind that OPT is only
available to students with F-1 visas and is employment that is directly
relevant to your major field of study.
What is STEM OPT?
 An F-1 student's program of study in an authorized STEM field or area is tied
to the 24-month STEM OPT extension, which is a temporary training period.
Students who have completed or will soon complete a STEM program that
qualifies may be qualified to apply for one of these extensions.
Authorization length and working hours
 Less any OPT time used prior to completion, the initial post-complete
timeframe for which students can apply is 12 months. The requested
employment start date must occur no later than 60 days following the
program's conclusion. The start date for the employment authorization is the
later of the day it is requested or the date it is approved.
 Exception: Regardless of when the actual extension is approved, the 24-
month STEM OPT extension's work authorization term starts the day after the
initial post-completion OPT employment authorization expires and lasts for 24
months.
Internships and volunteer work during
OPT
 For the first 12-month period of F-1 post-completion Optional Practical
Training (OPT), volunteering and taking part in an unpaid internship are both
acceptable forms of employment. These activities can be registered in SEVIS
as legitimate OPT employment. The option for voluntary work or training
must adhere to all relevant federal and state labor regulations. Volunteering
is not the same as doing unpaid labor. Volunteering means giving your time
without any type of compensation to a group whose main goal is benevolent
or humanitarian in character. Resources on what are considered acceptable
volunteer activities can be found on the Department of Labor website.
