 For the first 12-month period of F-1 post-completion Optional Practical
Training (OPT), volunteering and taking part in an unpaid internship are both
acceptable forms of employment. These activities can be registered in SEVIS
as legitimate OPT employment. The option for voluntary work or training
must adhere to all relevant federal and state labor regulations. Volunteering
is not the same as doing unpaid labor. Volunteering means giving your time
without any type of compensation to a group whose main goal is benevolent
