Professional Learning Communities 
(PLCs) are important because they foster 
collaboration and ongoing professional 
development among colleagues, which 
ultimately benefits the students.

LAMS Professional Learning Communities 
Little Axe Middle School Principal Dalton Griffin attended a 
Model Schools Summit in Orlando, Florida over the summer 
and a Professional Learning Community workshop in Tulsa. 
Inspired by what he learned at the summit and at previous Gear 
Up leadership conferences, Mr. Griffin created a system to 
foster collaborative learning among his teachers via weekly PLC 
meetings. 
The model schools summit, PLC workshop, and materials 
provided as part of the collaborative learning system are funded 
by Gear Up grant monies.

LAMS PLCs 
In an effort to provide teachers with weekly opportunities to 
collaborate with their colleagues, Mr. Griffin initially devised an 
Overdrive schedule that included PLC time within the hourly 
student schedule. 
However, the high school was not able to adjust their bell 
schedules to include the Overdrive, so Mr. Griffin revised it to 
include PLC time at the beginning of each day. 
Each core subject department meets once per week (English 
on Monday, etc.) and each grade level meets once every three 
weeks on Friday.

A packet has been provided for you which includes our bell 
schedule and other PLC protocols, including the handouts we 
use during our meetings to track our progress. 
You are welcome to use and modify these documents in order 
to develop your own PLC program.

they study or work on assignments.

Dream Catcher 
Initiative
Little Axe District Initiative 
The Little Axe school district designed an overall school 
improvement initiative called PRIDE, which stands for Personal 
Responsibility Involves Daily Effort. 
District goals include embedding literacy and pride in all 
classes. 
The district’s theme is the driving force behind the middle 
school’s Dream Catcher program, which includes academic, 
attendance, behavioral, and service points for the students, 
along with a positive reward for earning those points.

then it becomes a goal.” 
Our theme at the middle school is to overcome obstacles and 
set goals to catch our dreams. 
The kickoff for our initiative included a Dream Catcher 
assembly, where we introduced students to our point system 
and the rewards that they can earn each 9 weeks, and the huge 
reward at the end of the year.

LAMS Dream Catcher Essay 
We asked students to write an essay stating what their dreams 
are for the future. Future could be defined as an end-of-school-year 
goal, end-of-middle-school goal, end-of-high-school goal, 
or end-of-college goal. 
The essay was written in SMART goal format, meaning each 
goal had to be: 
Specific | Measurable | Attainable | Realistic | Timely

Once students completed their essays, we placed them inside 
each student’s Dream Catcher packet, which includes handouts 
students use to track their service points.

The number of students on our ineligible list is down 50% 
from this time last year. 
Behavior 
Not only are the number of referrals down this year, but the 
severity of the infractions is reduced, as well. 
Attendance 
Our attendance numbers have increased by 2% this year. 
Service 
Students are seeking opportunities to serve others in school, 
including their teachers, cafeteria ladies, and office staff.

LAMS Professional Learning Communities Little Axe Middle School Principal Dalton Griffin attended a Model Schools Summit in Orlando, Florida over the summer and a Professional Learning Community workshop in Tulsa. Inspired by what he learned at the summit and at previous Gear Up leadership conferences, Mr. Griffin created a system to foster collaborative learning among his teachers via weekly PLC meetings. The model schools summit, PLC workshop, and materials provided as part of the collaborative learning system are funded by Gear Up grant monies. © 2014, Battelle for Kids. LAMS PLCs In an effort to provide teachers with weekly opportunities to collaborate with their colleagues, Mr. Griffin initially devised an Overdrive schedule that included PLC time within the hourly student schedule. However, the high school was not able to adjust their bell schedules to include the Overdrive, so Mr. Griffin revised it to include PLC time at the beginning of each day. Each core subject department meets once per week (English on Monday, etc.) and each grade level meets once every three weeks on Friday. © 2014, Battelle for Kids.   • 16. Little Axe District Initiative The Little Axe school district designed an overall school improvement initiative called PRIDE, which stands for Personal Responsibility Involves Daily Effort. District goals include embedding literacy and pride in all classes. The district’s theme is the driving force behind the middle school’s Dream Catcher program, which includes academic, attendance, behavioral, and service points for the students, along with a positive reward for earning those points. © 2014, Battelle for Kids.   • 17. LAMS Dream Catcher Theme “ A dream is just a dream until you write it down; © 2014, Battelle for Kids. All Rights Reserved then it becomes a goal.” Our theme at the middle school is to overcome obstacles and set goals to catch our dreams. The kickoff for our initiative included a Dream Catcher assembly, where we introduced students to our point system and the rewards that they can earn each 9 weeks, and the huge reward at the end of the year.

  • 19. LAMS Dream Catcher Essay We asked students to write an essay stating what their dreams are for the future. Future could be defined as an end-of-school-year goal, end-of-middle-school goal, end-of-high-school goal, or end-of-college goal. The essay was written in SMART goal format, meaning each goal had to be: Specific | Measurable | Attainable | Realistic | Timely © 2014, Battelle for Kids.   • 25. Dream Catcher Initiative Statistics Goals Results Academic © 2014, Battelle for Kids. All Rights Reserved The number of students on our ineligible list is down 50% from this time last year. Behavior Not only are the number of referrals down this year, but the severity of the infractions is reduced, as well. Attendance Our attendance numbers have increased by 2% this year. Service Students are seeking opportunities to serve others in school, including their teachers, cafeteria ladies, and office staff.
