• The occupational environment encompasses the physical, mental, social, and
organizational conditions of a workplace.
• It directly influences worker safety, health, and productivity.
• Ensuring a healthy workplace requires identifying hazards, providing protective
gear , and mitigating risks

a. Man & Physical, chemical
& biological agents
Physical agents: The physical factors in the working environment which may be
adverse to health are heat, cold, humidity, air movement, heat radiation, light, noise,
vibrations etc.
The amount of working and breathing space, toilet, washing and bathing facilities
are also important factors in an occupational environment.
Chemical: These comprise a large numbers of chemicals, toxic ducts and gases
which are potential hazards to the health of the workers.
Some chemical agents cause disabling respiratory illnesses, some cause injury to
skin and some may have a deleterious effect on the blood and other organs of the
body.
Biological: The workers may be exposed to viral, bacterial and parasitic agents
which may result from close contact with animals or their products, contaminated
water, soil or food.
b. Man & Machine
• An industry or factory implies the use of machines driven by power by power
with emphasis on mass production.
• The unguarded machines, poor installation and lack of safety measures are the
causes of accident which is a major problem in industries.
• Working for long hours in unphysiological postures is the cause of fatigue,
backache, diseases of joints and muscles and impairment of the worker’s health
and efficiency.
c. Man & man
"Man" means the individual worker.
It includes:
• Physical health and fitness
• Mental and emotional health
• Knowledge, skills, and attitude
• Work capacity and motivation
• Safe work practices
Man in the Occupational Environment: This means the interaction between workers (man-to-
man relationship) in the workplace and how it affects health, safety, and productivity.
It includes:
• Good communication among workers
• Teamwork and cooperation
• Respect for colleagues
• Healthy supervisor–employee relationships
• Prevention of conflicts, bullying, harassment, and discrimination
• Social support at work
• Following workplace rules and safety procedures together
Importance
• Improves job satisfaction
• Increases productivity
• Reduces workplace stress
• Prevents accidents and errors
• Promotes a healthy and safe work environment
• Example: In a factory, if workers communicate well, help each other, and follow
safety rules together, the workplace becomes safer and more productive. On the
other hand, poor communication or conflicts among workers can lead to stress,
mistakes, and occupational accidents.
