• AgriNewTech s.r.l. (ANT) is a SME working the field of
agricultural and environmental biotechnologies.
• ANT was born as a spin-off company from the University of
Torino, with the aim of transferring the results of years of
scientific researches carried out at international level by the
charter members.
• Business model:
• Services: pesticide efficacy evaluation and certification;
scientific and technical support for the development of
innovative products from organic wastes, by-products and
compost, for sustainable crop protection.

Soil-borne pathogens (Phytophthora spp., Pythium spp., Fusarium oxysporum, Rhizoctonia
solani, Sclerotinia sclerotiorum…) cause serious losses on field and greenhouse crops, from
the initial stages of the production process up to harvest, and are notoriously difficult to
control.
Following the restrictions and phase out of some key soil fumigants over the past years, EU
farmers have a clear need for new and sustainable solutions.

Among foliar pathogens, various species of downy and powdery mildew and moulds can
cause complete loss of high value crops such as basil, tomato, lettuce and grape.
These organisms are relatively recent emerging threats in some countries, and provide
examples of where small area but high value crops, often critical to horticultural economies,
can be devastated.
Relatively low disease incidence can reduce quality at the point of sale such that crops are
rejected by retailers. Fungicides (3-15 treatments) are generally applied.

Conclusions
• Biowastes, agroindustrial and agrobioenergy co/by-products can be a
valuable source of products for sustainable crop protection.
• Novel solutions developed will require more investments for registration (~1
million € for a BCA) and 3-10 years before reaching the market (in USA the
same BCA would reach the market in 2-3 years).
• Yeasts are commonly used in food production (baking, beverages…) but they
need a full registration (toxicology, ecotoxicology, environmental safety, human
exposure…) to be used in agriculture as biological control agents for crop
protection.

AgriNewTech: research for action Brussels, April 25th 2018 Massimo Pugliese (AgriNewTech) Conclusions • Biowastes, agroindustrial and agrobioenergy co/by-products can be a valuable source of products for sustainable crop protection. • Novel solutions developed will require more investments for registration (~1 million € for a BCA) and 3-10 years before reaching the market (in USA the same BCA would reach the market in 2-3 years). • Yeasts are commonly used in food production (baking, beverages…) but they need a full registration (toxicology, ecotoxicology, environmental safety, human exposure…) to be used in agriculture as biological control agents for crop protection.
