अल्पाक्षरमसक्न्दग्धम्सारिद्विश्ििोमुखम ्।
अस्िोभमनिद्यं च सूत्रं सूत्रविदो विदुः ॥
अल्पाक्षरम् असक्न्दग्धम् सारिि् विश्ििोमुखम्।
अस्िोभम्अनिद्यं च सूत्रं सूत्रविदो1 विदुः ॥
(1) अल्पाक्षर = concise , (2) असंददग्धम् = unequivocal , (3) सारिि्= meaningful
of fresh and high import, (4) विश्ििोमुखम् = of universal application , (5)
अस्िोभं = succinct (free from repetition) , (6) अिन्द्यम् = impeccable (free from
inaccuracies of words and sense)
Those who know sutra say that the sutras possess the following six
characteristics: it is concise, is unequivocal, is fresh and of high import, of
universal application, is succinct and impeccable.

अथािो भक्तिं व्याख्यास्यामः । १.०१ -Now, therefore we shall expound Bhakti
सा त्िक्स्मन ् परप्रेमरूपा । १.०२- That Bhakti is verily is of the Nature o fSupreme Love of God
अमृिस्िरूपा च । १.०३- That Bhakti is also having the essential form of elixir.
यल्लब्धध्िा पुमान ् ससद्धो भिति अमृिो भिति िृप्िो भिति ।१.०४
Gaining that , man realizes his perfection, divinity and becomes contended
यत्प्राप्य न ककक्ञ्चद् िाञ्छति न शोचति न द्िेक्टि न रमिे नोत्साही भिति।
Attaining that, the man does not desire anything, free from grief and hatred ,does not rejoice, he does
not exert himself in furtherance of self interest
यज्ज्ञात्िा मत्तो भिति स्िब्धधो भिति आत्मारामो भिति । ६ - १.०६
Realizing that, man becomes intoxicated and fascinated, as it were, because he gets immersed in the
enjoyment of the bliss of the Atma
सा न कामयमाना तनरोधरूपत्िाि् । १.०७-That Bhakti is not of the nature of lust, because it is in the
form of renunciation

Mr Nanda Mohan Shenoy CDPSE, CISA ,CAIIB <5> सूत्र लक्षिम् अल्पाक्षरमसक्न्दग्धम्सारिद्विश्ििोमुखम ्। अस्िोभमनिद्यं च सूत्रं सूत्रविदो विदुः ॥ अल्पाक्षरम् असक्न्दग्धम् सारिि् विश्ििोमुखम्। अस्िोभम्अनिद्यं च सूत्रं सूत्रविदो1 विदुः ॥ (1) अल्पाक्षर = concise , (2) असंददग्धम् = unequivocal , (3) सारिि्= meaningful of fresh and high import, (4) विश्ििोमुखम् = of universal application , (5) अस्िोभं = succinct (free from repetition) , (6) अिन्द्यम् = impeccable (free from inaccuracies of words and sense) Those who know sutra say that the sutras possess the following six characteristics: it is concise, is unequivocal, is fresh and of high import, of universal application, is succinct and impeccable.

Mr Nanda Mohan Shenoy CDPSE, CISA ,CAIIB <6> अथािो भक्तिं व्याख्यास्यामः । १.०१ -Now, therefore we shall expound Bhakti सा त्िक्स्मन ् परप्रेमरूपा । १.०२- That Bhakti is verily is of the Nature o fSupreme Love of God अमृिस्िरूपा च । १.०३- That Bhakti is also having the essential form of elixir. यल्लब्धध्िा पुमान ् ससद्धो भिति अमृिो भिति िृप्िो भिति ।१.०४ Gaining that , man realizes his perfection, divinity and becomes contended यत्प्राप्य न ककक्ञ्चद् िाञ्छति न शोचति न द्िेक्टि न रमिे नोत्साही भिति। Attaining that, the man does not desire anything, free from grief and hatred ,does not rejoice, he does not exert himself in furtherance of self interest यज्ज्ञात्िा मत्तो भिति स्िब्धधो भिति आत्मारामो भिति । ६ - १.०६ Realizing that, man becomes intoxicated and fascinated, as it were, because he gets immersed in the enjoyment of the bliss of the Atma सा न कामयमाना तनरोधरूपत्िाि् । १.०७-That Bhakti is not of the nature of lust, because it is in the form of renunciation प्रथमोऽध्यायः १-७

Mr Nanda Mohan Shenoy CDPSE, CISA ,CAIIB <7> तनरोधस्िु लोकिेदव्यापारन्यासः । १.०८ िक्स्मन्ननन्यिा िद्विरोचधषूदासीनिा च ।१.०९ अन्याश्रयािां त्यागोऽनन्यिा । १.१० लोकिेदेषु िदनुक ू लाचरिं िद्विरोचधषूदासीनिा । ११ - १.११ भििु तनश्चयदार्ढवयादूध्िं शास्त्ररक्षिम् । १२ - १.१२ अन्यथा पातित्यशङ्कया । १३ - १.१३ लोकोऽवप िािदेि, भोिनाददव्यापारस्त्िाशरीरधारिािचध । १४ - १.१४ िल्लक्षिातन िाच्यन्िे नानामिभेदाि ् । १५ - १.१५ पूिाददटिनुराग इति पाराशयवः । १६ - १.१६ कथाददक्टिति गगवः । १७ - १.१७ आत्मरत्यविरोधेनेति शाक्डिल्यः । १८ - १.१८ नारदस्िु िदवपविाणखलाचारिा िद्विस्मरिे परमव्याक ु लिेति । १९ - १.१९ अस्त्येिमेिम ् । २० - १.२०

Mr Nanda Mohan Shenoy CDPSE, CISA ,CAIIB <8> तनरोधस्िु लोकिेदव्यापारन्यासः । १.०८ तनरोधः िुअ लोकिेदव्यापारन्यासः (अक्स्ि) This renunciation is only a consecration (dedication) of both Worldly and Vedic activities िक्स्मन्ननन्यिा िद्विरोचधषूदासीनिा च । १.०९ िक्स्मन्7 अनन्यिा (भक्तिः) िि् विरोचधषु7 उदासीनिा च In such renunciation ,by dedication ,there is exclusive devotion and indifference to everything towards everything opposed to it.

Mr Nanda Mohan Shenoy CDPSE, CISA ,CAIIB <11> अन्याश्रयािां त्यागोऽनन्यिा । १.१० अन्याश्रयािां त्यागः अनन्यिा (भक्तिः) (अक्स्ि) ‘Exclusive devotion’ is abandonment of all other supports लोकिेदेषु िदनुक ू लाचरिं िद्विरोचधषूदासीनिा । १.११ लोकिेदेषु िि् (पुमान्) अनुक ू लाचरिं (एि) िि् (पुमान्) विरोचधषु उदासीनिा (ििविे) Indifference (to factors hostile to devotion) means performance of both worldly and scriptural activities as are favourable to devotion.

Mr Nanda Mohan Shenoy CDPSE, CISA ,CAIIB <14> पूिाददटिनुराग इति पाराशयवः । १.१६ पूिाददषु अनुरागः इति पाराशयवः (मन्यिे) Vyasa considers thet worship and others as a manifestation of Bhakti कथाददक्टिति गगवः । १.१७ कथाददषु इति गगवः (मन्यिे) The sage Garga considers that listening (to the stories of the Lord) as a manifestation of Bhakti आत्मरत्यविरोधेनेति शाक्डिल्यः । १.१८ आत्मरति अविरोधेन इति शाक्डिल्यः (मन्यिे) The sage Shandilya considers that it should not be detrimental to the delight in the Self

Mr Nanda Mohan Shenoy CDPSE, CISA ,CAIIB <15> नारदस्िु िदवपविाणखलाचारिा िद्विस्मरिे परमव्याक ु लिेति । १.१९ नारदः िु िि्-अवपविा-अणखलाचार-िा, िि्-विस्मरिे परमव्याक ु लिा इति (मन्यिे) But Narada considers that the characteristics of Devotion is dedication of all activities (to the Lord) and extreme anguish if He was forgotten. अस्त्येिमेिम ् । १.२० अक्स्ि एिम ् एिम ् There are such examples
