Editor's Notes

  • #4 We recognize the truth that a strong and inclusive education system is a foundation for economic growth, social well being and innovation. But in both developing and developed countries, the application of technology in education is inconsistent. And we are seeing pockets of effective use of tools like technology in education. And in most cases, today’s typical classroom and pedagogical style looks pretty similar to classrooms one hundred years ago – students sitting in rows of desks using a pen and paper to take notes, with the only major difference today being the use of computers where available to automate certain processes or mirror activities done initially by hand. The untapped potential of IT to truly alter and enhance learning environments in ways that will foster social and economic opportunity for everyone – including underserved communities – is enormous. But it is only made possible if all the people in this room work together and do what we must do…
  • #5 We also built a common view on what opportunity technology brings to transform education … that has also resonated well … and has provided a framework for how we GTM and how we add value. We also have a framework describing the principles by which we engineer our products.
  • #6 This is why it is so important for all of us to come together, work together and succeed together. We’ve seen the successes and focus that can come through our collaboration.<<<NOTE: Click for Partner emphasis build>>> Examples: Synetrix: a K12 software provider based in the UK, delivers rich, scalable e-learning solutions built on Microsoft technologySynetrix leverages the Microsoft Learning Gateway to provide its customers a powerful and flexible hub for e-learning technologies, with the ability to scale up to large deployments, and a rich user interface that keeps pupils engaged. Synetrix has deployed its solution at large sites such as the East Midlands Broadband Consortium, which comprises eight local authorities, 2,200 institutions, and 750,000 users. Microsoft and Synetrix continue to improve these technologies, including a rich user interface built by Synetrix using Microsoft Silverlight. The engaging graphical interface combines workflow, accessibility, and usability in ways that help drive teaching and learning outcomes.Through programs like Partners in Learning, we can work with the public sector to create innovate schools in all parts of the world. Innovative schools armed with the right people, processes and technology to help better prepare students for the workforce of the 21st Century. And once these beachheads are established and proven, we must work together to scale them out and make these amazing schools the norm and not the exception. We look forward to the opportunity to partner with those of you in the room who taking those brave steps towards delivering 21st Century skills and learning for all. <<<OTHER PARTNER EXAMPLES – Just in case you want more>>>ITWorx: headquartered in Egypt, specializes in building education portals based on SharePoint and the Microsoft Learning Gateway FrameworkITWorx has worked closely with Microsoft to develop and extend the Microsoft Learning Gateway framework in education. A great example of this is the eLearning portal ITWorx built for Durham County, in England, where deployment and adoption by schools in the county have been fast, enhanced learning opportunities, and provided rich learning environments that have brought students, teachers, administrators, and parents together. Today, 87 percent of the 300 schools in Durham use the portals extensively.Etech Group: based in Australia, builds K12 learning environments that leverage the power of SharePointEtech’sStudywiz Web-based e-learning platform is designed with a look, feel, functionality, and tools specifically tailored to the needs of K12 environments. Etech recently teamed up with Microsoft to integrate Studywiz with SharePoint Server 2007. Thanks to this integration, customer deployments can take advantage of the Microsoft Learning Gateway, so schools can schools can organize, link, and control their various software systems together with Studywiz’s easy-to-use and powerful tools.
  • #7 But our investment is not confined to product engineering alone, though that is critical. The portfolio also comprises people, programs and research… You will hear about many of these things over the next three days.People: In market sales, marketing, partner engagement, evangelism. Here are some approximate figures representing the various field people investments – we could say that we have:Over 275 people in field sales, marketing and partner engagementHave more than 60 people focused on evangelismHave about another 100 people focused on some of the programs above.Details from our planning at the beginning of FY09 for your info only:Pub Sec Edu field sales and marketing: 290 FTEDPE: 69 FTEPrograms: PiL=86; PTA= 16Live@EDU: 12 FTE (+ 25 part time)
  • #22 What we are likely to see within Education is a blend of applications and services. Some will be on-premise, some will be in the cloud and some will be both. Email for example. Many institutions today run and manage their own email service, but this is just a commodity that can and should be provided as an external service. Likewise CRM for colleges, portals and the many services from Microsoft such as SkyDrive, Live Mesh, Office Live Workspace, etc.Equally, for reasons of security and management, it is important that some applications remain on-premise at either a school or local authority level. Examples might include HR, payroll, MIS, security and business intelligence. Either there are data security concerns or the application is local and specific to the institution. As we saw before the idea is to blend the best of both worlds together.
  • #24 So, what is Software Plus Services?  It is software on the desktop device + services in the cloud that are either Partner or Microsoft hosted. Microsoft software + services is designed to deliver the best of both software and services so customers can choose what makes the most sense for their business needs.A consistent user experience across delivery models allows companies to focus on user productivity rather than the deployment technology. The flexibility of being able to mix and match deployment models enables companies to support their unique and specific business requirements, such as serving headquarters’ users through an on-premise deployment while using a hosted model for remote users.Microsoft Hosted services offers customers rapid implementation, anywhere access, and ability to license services through their existing Volume Licensing agreement, while those customers that need to outsource their IT needs, require packaged solutions, or that need additional integration work are likely better served by taking advantage of Partner-Hosted services through the SPLA program.
  • #25 This approach is called software-plus-services and is an industry-wide trend ……In an education context this means that the institution remains in control. Investment in the existing infrastructure is protected as many services such as security, access control and local applications will remain on-premise for the foreseeable future. But what if these new services could be ‘consumed’ by existing systems and integrated into the platform to achieve the best of both worlds?Let’s take a look at an example of these new web based services and how they might be used in an educational context.
