This document discusses metamaterials. Metamaterials are artificial materials engineered to have properties that are not found in nature. They are made of assemblies of multiple conventional elements arranged in periodic patterns which give them properties that depend on geometry rather than chemical composition. Negative refractive index can be achieved when the permeability and permittivity are both negative. Potential applications of metamaterials include invisibility cloaks, superlenses, antennas, and absorbing light. Further work is needed to optimize fabrication processes and characterize more complex 3D metamaterial structures.
