Physician and Medical
Information Overload
What is the solution?
1
Medicine is evolving quickly and online resources have
become increasingly important to medical professionals
and patients. A 2006 study by MaxMD found that US
physicians spend at least 50 minutes per night online
researching disease information, drug information, and to
a lesser degree, continuing medical education
information1
. Online medical resources are now a central
component of healthcare delivery.

Nine out of ten physicians believe that enhanced
access to online medical information has improved
quality of care2

Problem: Information Overload
"Physicians, like patients, are inundated with
information and find it difficult to keep up with
the important developments in their field."
The main source of new relevant medical findings is
the rapidly expanding research literature. According
to a study published in the Journal of Medical Library
Association in 2004, if a physician was to keep up on
the latest findings in primary care, it would require 29
hours of reading a week3
. This problem has only
gotten worse in the intervening years, especially as
new scientific research is being published at an
exponential rate. To illustrate this trend, PubMed - the
National Library of Medicine’s database -now indexes
over 1 million articles a year. With new discoveries are

care for patients?6
made at an exponential rate, the half-life of medical
information being seven years. Physicians do not
have enough time to parse the volume of published
research and often resort to educating themselves
through dispersed and unreliable channels, such as
Pubmed, Google searches and marketing material
from Life Science companies5
. Current popular
search tools are ill-suited for finding medical
information due to the high volume and lack of
relevance of the search results.

A semantic search engine that captures the
user’s intent.
An application that delivers the most pertinent
and important content.
The application would personalize the results to
the physician’s profile.
The application can cut through the noise of the
abundantly available medical information while
maintaining diversity of sources.
Allows physicians to most efficiently use their
existing journal subscriptions in one platform

A semantic search engine is a smart search engine. It
uses the context and the definition of the search term
to bring more relevant results to the physician. Essen-
tially, the semantic search engine discerns a physi-
cian's intent in searching for a medical case or
concept.
For example, if the user has combined their search
with the terms “symptoms” or “treatment”, it can
discern that the person has a specific medical case in
mind. However, if a person has been searching for a
rare protein, this is more likely a research question.

CONTEXT
SEMANTICS
To help physicians quickly access the most relevant
information, an application would rely on models
that assess the clinical impact of medical research
and generate a ranking, much like Google PageRank.
This ranking would allow the physician to find the
most relevant results first — saving them valuable
time.
The application has a complete body of information.
The model sifts through “features” of published
research - qualitative ones such as the title, abstract,
authors, and quantitative ones such as citations,
downloads - and searches for patterns that indicate
clinical usefulness.
The application tracks the latest research develop-
ments and their corresponding clinical relevance.
The application would take new publications from
the top journals and run them through the model to
determine the work’s clinical relevance.
The application finds the most relevant information
for physicians quickly. The application would deter-
mine the most relevant search results by combining
the degree of matching on the user's input along with
the clinical relevance score of the content item.
“An application that delivers the most pertinent
and important content.”

The application takes into account the physician’s
background to deliver the most relevant results. For
example, if a physician self-identifies as an Emergen-
cy Physician, we would provide content that is
tailored to Emergency Medicine and refine the search
results based on crowdsourced data from other
Emergency Physicians.
The application can identity which material many
physicians find useful.
Out of the returned results for a search, which results
would a roomful of physicians think are the most
useful? The model would simulate how they would
do this without having them all in the same room.
The application would have crowd-sourcing capabil-
ities. The platform would track various user actions
such as expands, bookmarks, shares, removes, opens
and even implicit actions like the length of time spent
on a screen or an entry. These actions can then be
used to boost or demote content for each search
term, community, or person. For example, a search
for “heart attack treatment” where everyone clicks on
the 4th item displayed would boost the 4th item
upwards towards 1st, and the 1st item downwards.
“The application would personalize the results
to the physician’s profile.”

Along with medical and scientific journals, clinical
guidelines, videos and medical blogs are important
sources of real-time information for physicians and
also, their patients.
The application lets physicians optimize the time
spent finding information.
Physicians with existing journal subscriptions should
not have to use dispersed channels to find published
research. They would be able to access and search
those journals efficiently through one centralized
application, saving time. The application should also
provide physicians with trending and important
developments based on their search history and
profile. In addition, physicians would be able to easily
share and receive relevant material with their
colleagues and patients.
“The application can cut through the noise of
the abundantly available medical information
while maintaining diversity of sources.”

ONE PLATFORM
MedNexus is the
solution.
MedNexus is a semantic search engine for Healthcare
professionals and patients - think "Google for Medi-
cine".
We are the first to leverage machine learning and
crowdsourcing to deliver relevant content based on
the user’s interests. Our ranking system is based on
novel machine learning algorithms that vet the clini-
cal impact and relevance of published research using
a variety of metrics. Search results are dynamically
updated based on crowdsourced data from other
similar users.
The platform allows physicians to look up articles,
reviews, guidelines and other high quality medical
content on specific topics at point-of-care and get
quick answers based on the latest medical research.
It will enhance their knowledge of standards of care
and new advances in their field of specialty, which
will translate into better care delivery. Our tool serves
not only as a clinical reference for practicing physi-
cians and medical students, but will also act as an
educational resource for health consumers who want
to gather information on a topic they don’t know
much about.
