The document discusses the history and evolution of the English language from its origins as Anglo-Frisian dialects brought to Britain by Anglo-Saxon settlers in the 5th century AD. Over the following centuries, the language was influenced by Old Norse due to Viking invasions and Norman French after the Norman conquest, and has continued to adopt loanwords from other languages like Latin, Greek and more recently French. The modern English language incorporates elements from all of these linguistic influences.
