The neural membrane has an excitable property that allows it to generate action potentials for signal transmission. At rest, the intracellular fluid has a negative charge compared to the extracellular fluid due to an uneven distribution of ions like sodium, potassium, calcium, and chloride. Ion channels and pumps in the phospholipid membrane help establish and maintain concentration gradients of these ions. When the membrane becomes permeable to specific ions, diffusion forces can change the membrane potential towards equilibrium values for different ions. This allows the membrane potential to rapidly depolarize or repolarize for action potential generation and propagation of neural signals.
