Competitive intelligence is an important aspect of how large corporations compete within an industry. It is also at the source of new innovations that have some intentional research and development targeted to capture market share or maintain market leadership. It is a technique that may be part of an existing role, but it is best implemented as a high-level executive division of the company that focuses specifically on competitive intelligence. It is to often split between the marketing and legal departments and lacks the participation of the R&D team. As competition is increasingly global competitive intelligence is much harder to do but even more important since the threats can remain undetected and suddenly appear in the companies prime markets and not leaving any time for a response.
