South Asia Economic and Social DevelopmentRP Pamplona
South Asia has some of the highest levels of poverty in the world due to factors like poor nutrition, though economic development has been uneven across countries. While India and Bangladesh struggle with widespread poverty, other nations like Sri Lanka, Maldives and Bhutan have more prosperous economies focused on industries like tourism and fishing. India in particular shows strong divisions in development, with southern and western areas growing faster than the north and east. Overall social development also lags in areas of health, education and gender equality, though some regions like Kerala set positive examples through policies promoting education, women's rights and family planning.

This document discusses the role of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in the socioeconomic stability of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and FATA regions of Pakistan. It finds that SMEs make substantial contributions to GDP, employment, taxes, and standards of living. However, SMEs in these regions struggle with lack of access to financing, high interest rates, and other barriers. The document recommends solutions like Islamic financing models, collateral-free leasing, entrepreneurship training, and capacity building to strengthen SME development.
Ravindra Deyshappriya from the Lakshman Kadirgamar Institute in Sri Lanka presented on the trade, investment, and tourism relations between Sri Lanka and China. He outlined that trade relations date back to 1952 but Sri Lanka now has a large trade deficit with China. Chinese investment and financing have increased and are an important source but still lag behind investments in other Asian nations. Tourism from China has grown rapidly in recent years but the duration and spending of Chinese tourists is relatively low compared to European tourists. Strengthening economic ties through initiatives like the Maritime Silk Road could further boost Sri Lanka-China relations.

The terrain of Asia is characterized by vast plains like the Siberian and Indian Plains. It also contains major plateaus such as the Tibetan and Iranian Plateaus, as well as the highest mountains in the world like the Himalayas. Major seas include the Sea of Japan, South China Sea, and Red Sea. Notable lakes are Lake Baikal and the Caspian Sea, and significant rivers include the Yangtze, Ganges, and Indus.
China has over 5,000 years of history spanning many dynasties and emperors. In 1949, the People's Republic of China was formed under Mao Zedong. Pakistan was one of the first countries to recognize China in 1950, strengthening their diplomatic relations. Since then, China has been Pakistan's strongest ally and largest provider of military and economic assistance, helping with numerous infrastructure projects through their growing trade relationship.
The document discusses trade patterns and agreements in Asia. It notes that over 50% of trade in the region is within Asia, with China playing a major role. While intra-regional trade is higher in East Asia, it is more limited in South Asia at around 6%. It also examines the impact and proliferation of free trade agreements, questions around their effectiveness, and implications for the WTO. The document also analyzes trends in goods and services trade, foreign direct investment, and the role of public-private partnerships in facilitating trade across the regions.
This document presents opportunities and threats for Nepal's economic growth and development in relation to India and China. It discusses Nepal's geographical position between the two large economies and provides an overview of Nepal's historical relationships and open border with India and diplomatic relationship with China. It also briefly summarizes the current economies of India and China. While Nepal currently faces challenges of being a poorer, agriculture-dependent country with political unrest, opportunities exist in utilizing Nepal's position as a transit point between India and China. Threats include potential rivalry between the two large neighbors and activities of Tibetan independence activists. The document recommends Nepal pursue economic diplomacy and strengthen relationships of trust and confidence with both countries.

International trade policies deal with how national governments regulate imports and exports through measures like tariffs and quotas. India transitioned in the 1990s from a closed economy with high tariffs and restrictions to a more open one, increasing trade as a percentage of GDP. The objectives of trade policies are to both protect domestic industries but also optimize resources and benefit consumers through increased market access and trade.

Economic Comparison between India and ChinaShreya Jain
China has a larger economy than India based on GDP and GDP per capita. China also has lower unemployment and inflation rates, and a higher current account balance. However, China's GINI coefficient is worse than India's, indicating greater inequality. While China has a larger population, India has a younger population that is less urbanized. China has a larger labor force and higher rates of life expectancy, literacy, and urbanization compared to India.
