Kauchak and Eggen divide classroom time into five overlapping categories to explain classroom management in terms of time management: Available time is the total time available for school activities, approximately 6 hours per school day. Allocated time is time allotted for teaching and learning, approximately 4 hours and 45 minutes. Instructional time is when actual teaching and learning occurs after routines. Engaged time is when students actively participate in learning activities, approximately 2 hours. Academic learning time is when students are actively and successfully engaged in learning and is maximized through effective classroom management, approximately 48 minutes per day.
