The WHO Expert Committee on Drug Dependence met from September 17-20, 2002 to review several psychoactive substances, including amfepramone. The Committee had previously recommended amfepramone for critical review based on reports of abuse and trafficking from many regions. Amfepramone is an appetite suppressant with effects similar to scheduled amphetamines. While dependence can occur, data on the incidence is limited. Reports to INCB indicate illicit trade, but few adverse reaction reports related to abuse were received, and government responses also suggested limited diversion and abuse. The Committee conducted a critical review of amfepramone.
