 A literacy bag is a collection of items in a
container, based upon a book or a theme
used to explore, extend, enrich, engage and
enhance literacy development.
 Preschool, Pre-K, Kindergarten, Grade 1, 2 or
older, English Language Learners
(ELL), communities, libraries, families and
school
 Contents should be hands-on
 Include manipulatives
 Songs, chants or rhymes
 Link contents/activities to Program of Studies
 Stories children can relate to
 More challenging
 Include books that the children can read on
their own
 Fiction/Non-Fiction
 Focus on curriculum that you need support
from home (difficult concepts)
 Any bag!
 No support at home? Choose books that they
can read
 Vocabulary
building
 Research bags
 Science Fair in a bag
 Create bags for their book buddies
 Book report
Suggested activities to do with “Rocks and Minerals”
1) Read the book “Canada’s Rocks and Minerals”. Answer the following questions
about the book.
1) Name one thing that you learned.
2) What is the difference between a rock and a mineral?
3) What is the Mohs scale?
4) What is your birthstone?
5) What is a common mineral found in Saskatchewan?
2) Open the box of samples. Pick your favourite one and write a story about how
it was discovered.
3) Complete the Mineral Identification activity. Use the directions and materials
provided.
4) Where do you think you can find minerals in your home? Name 5 things that
you think have minerals in them. Now look at the cards in the “Minerals in Your
Home” bag and see some of the samples. Were you surprised at some of the
items that had minerals in them? If so which ones?
5) Read the Rock Cycle Script and follow along on the diagram with your finger.
6) Complete the Rock Cycle file folder activity. Check your answers with the
answer key.
7) Use the handout to go on a rock hunt in your area. If you can, go on a rock
hunt in a different area and compare your findings.
8) Complete the homemade rock activity.
