INTRODUCTION
• KEGG (Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes) is a series of
databases developed by both the Bioinformatics Center of Kyoto
University and Human Genome Center of the University of Tokyo.
• This database has been available for over 10 years
• The “Pathway” section of KEGG consists mainly of metabolic
pathways.
• URL: http://www.genome.jp/kegg/
CONTINUE….
• KEGG is a collection of biological information compiled from
published material
• Includes information on genes, proteins, metabolic pathways,
molecular interactions, and biochemical reactions associated with
specific organisms
• Provides a relationship (map) for how these components are
organized in a cellular structure or reaction pathway.
• The Good: Information is reliable!
• The Bad: Information is not available for many organisms.
19 KEGG Databases
Systems information (6)
• PATHWAY, MODULE: Network information
• BRITE: Hierarchical classification
• DISEASE, DRUG, EDRUG: Medical and pharmaceutical information
Genomic information (7)
•ORTHOLOGY: Orthology for functional annotation
•GENOMES: Entrance of all information for each species
•GENES, DGENES: Genes for complete and draft genomes
•SSDB: All to all sequence similarity score and best-hit information
•EGENES, MGENES: Genes for EST assemblies and metagenomes
Chemical information (6):
•COMPOUND: Chemical compounds in metabolic pathways
•GLYCAN: Carbohydrate structures
•REACTION: Chemical reactions in metabolic pathways
•RPAIR, RCLASS: Reactant pairs and patterns from REACTION
•ENZYME: IUPAC Enzyme nomenclature

PATHWAY DATABASE
KEGG PATHWAYS: represent molecular relationships and reactions
networks. These networks can be grouped as follows:
1. The set of chemical reactions (metabolism) that happen in living
organisms. These processes allow organisms to grow, reproduce
and respond to their environment.
2. Genetic information processing, such as DNA replication.
3. Environmental information processing, such as signalling molecules
and interactions.
4. Cellular processes, such as the growth and death of cells.
PATHWAY DATBASE INFORMATIONS
• Metabolism
• Genetic Information Processing
• Environmental Information Processing
• Cellular Processes
• Human Diseases
• Drug Development

BRITE DATABASE
• A collection of hierarchical classifications showing knowledge of
various aspects of biological systems.
• In comparison with KEGG PATHWAY, KEGG BRITE provides many
different types of relationships not shown in KEGG PATHWAYS, so that
KEGG BRITE can be viewed as a global picture of KEGG PATHWAYS
• INFORMATIONS
 Genes and Proteins
 Compounds and Reactions
 Drugs and Diseases
 Cells and Organisms
LIGAND DATABASE
 Consisting of chemical building blocks for endogenous and
exogenous substances.
 It is a composite database consisting of COMPOUND, GLYCAN,
REACTION, RPAIR, RCLASS, and ENZYME databases
