Background
A reminder of the key concepts, terminology and reports
A reminder about R5
• There are just 4 main ‘master reports’: platform, database, title, and item
• Master reports contain a lot of information covering various metrics (user actions counted) and
attributes (info about the content)
• Master reports can be filtered to show limited ‘views’ of the data which are more manageable
• COUNTER have defined a set of ‘standard views’
• pre-set filters
• most common uses cases
• suppliers must provide
• Master reports can be filtered in other ways as well

Irene Barbers Forschungszentrum Juelich GmbHCOUNTER’s new Code of Practice was effective from January 2019. This breakout session will explain how librarians can make effective use of the new metrics to support decision making. It will explain how librarians can use these new reports to: Understand user behaviours; perform cost per use calculations on the articles they have paid for, compare book usage across different e-book platforms, investigate usage of A&I databases and full text databases; and evaluate usage of open access content. The session will also explain how COUNTER is ensuring compliance with the new Code of Practice, and how librarians can confidently tell if a publisher or vendor is compliant.

Release 5 of COUNTER standards provides consistency, clarity and flexibility over Release 4. It simplifies usage reporting with four master reports and standard views that can be filtered and combined. Release 5 also reduces the number of metrics and adds attributes to allow drilling down into the data. COUNTER SUSHI and report formats were updated to support the new standards and facilitate retrieval and analysis of usage data.

NISO Webinar: Assessment Metrics

With ever-shrinking library budgets it is more essential than ever to ensure that the library collection is targeted, relevant and well-used. Return on Investment (ROI) has become the mantra of library management and libraries need to show accountability for collection decisions. This webinar will focus on speakers who have successfully implemented assessment metrics (such as COUNTER 3, Eigenfactor and impact factors) as one determining factor of collection development decisions.

How does this compare with Release 4?
JUSP title master report filtering and database standard views 9 July 2019
Release 4 DB1
• 4 metrics: Regular Searches, Result Clicks, Record Views, Automated/Federated Searches
• Which to use? It depends on the database…
• Difficult to make comparisons and calculate cost per use
• What about full-text databases?
Release 5 DR_D1
• 5 metrics
• Total_Item_Investigations – combines result clicks and record views without duplication
• Searches_Regular – user actively selected the database, or it was the only option
• Searches_Automated - searches conducted through a discovery service or by an automated search agent
• Searches_Federated - user simultaneously search multiple databases hosted by the same or different vendors with a single
query from a single user interface
• Total_Item_Requests – NEW database metric that can be used to evaluate full-text databases
