Gandhiji undertook a 7-day fast from November 24-30, 1925 for delinquencies by some inmates of the Satyagraha Ashram he was running. He felt responsible as its creator to ensure high standards of character. Some criticized fasting as punishment, but he believed it was better to follow his conscience than appease critics. He provided rules for fasting safely, advising fasting for health issues like constipation or anemia. The fast was to purify the Ashram and uphold the trust of its supporters.
